Going from three vessel propane to Electric All in one

Years ago I designed a three vessel electric HERMs system(I’m an electronics engineer). I built it to do fly, batch or recirculating BIAB. Guess what? Last 15 brews have been recirculating BIAB. Efficiencies are always about 85%. Award winning beers. So much easier. If I ever sell this, I’d...

    American IPA Stone Ruination Clone

I made the original what seems like a zillion years ago. Seems to me adding Simcoe and Azacca makes this more like Pliny the Elder. Likely pretty tasty. Most of my current IPAs use Centennial, Citra and Simcoe with the occasional Azacca. Great hops.

    Back-sweetening after stabilizing

I’m a first time hardcider maker, due to SO MANY apples this year. After adding Kmeta and sorbate, I immediately started back sweetening with concentrated apple juice. I think it needs more, as the apples, I think, were a little tart, maybe not completely ripe. But now I read that you should...

Keg gaskets, sealing gaskets and leaks

Fortunately, I’ve already done the feet. I guess one has to replace “everything” on (very)old kegs to have some hope of success.

Keg gaskets, sealing gaskets and leaks

Interesting. I found out that pin locks need a fatter gasket than ball locks. Some sell them without specifying, which may be the problem for some. Since I’m converting to ball locks, new o-rings have solved those problems.

Keg gaskets, sealing gaskets and leaks

I think black ones are buna-n. Kegland has dropped the silicon ones because of oxygen permeability, replacing them with a yellow one that they tested in a lab. i’m hoping to find something that I can trust without doing a two day test every time I use it. Supposedly new lids don’t have the...

Keg gaskets, sealing gaskets and leaks

It’s more the shipping than the 2 bucks, as Williams is not where I normally get stuff. I had an order in a cart elsewhere for 5 complete gasket kits for $8 shipping included., so it is a bit more. But if it fixes the problem without buying brand new kegs(I have a lot of them), then maybe it’s...

Keg gaskets, sealing gaskets and leaks

No, I’m NOT using 30 PSI and I’m not asking for information on other orings(I’ve bulk quantities of those.) or asking how to diagnose leaks. I am asking SPECIFICALLY for experiences with KEG lid orings at LOW pressures.

Keg gaskets, sealing gaskets and leaks

I have mostly used Pin Lock kegs, and am converting posts to ball lock As well as starting to ferment under pressure. That’s when I noticed I had some bad seals, one on a keg lid(even with lube!) and one on a post. There “may” be others, as they are old. So I need to buy new. But which ones...

Ferment Under Pressure in Keg batch size?

I'm thinking about getting a spunding valve and fermenting under pressure. I mostly do Pale Ales and IPAs (occasionally NEIPA). The plan would be using the fermentation in one keg, with a connection to a second keg to use as a serving keg and hook the spunding valve to the serving keg. So the...

    Primary only fermentation

Old habits die slowly. Secondaries started in the 80’s(can you tell I’m old?). It was though that sitting on the yeast for very long will cause autolysis, which will quickly ruin the beer. Well, eventually it might, but not in 3 weeks or even 6 weeks for most beers, at least not anything...

Poll: Do you have, or plan to get, an electric car?

I had a Volt. I live in a rural area, and didn’t want range anxiety. The Volt Was PERFECT for that, except it was not AWD and didn’t have ground clearance for off road. 125 MPG lifetime! 94% of my driving was all electric, but the gas generator kicked in seamlessly when electric is depleted...

Value of brulosophy exbeeriments, others experience, myths and beliefs

I was a black belt in engineering management and a stint as a six-sigma blackbelt(think statistical modeling) before I retired. That may give me an ad I use Brulosophy alot. Like Homebrewtalk, it's helped me improve my beers. Yes, it isn't perfect, but who else is actually doing experiments...

Insulating keezer collar - best options

Can’t find original pics, but it’s like Joeywhat said. I cut the 2x6 Vinyl fence rails at a miter, stuffed insulation inside, screwed corner braces on, caulked the seams, and used the original hinges plus new hinges so I could open only the top for dealing with gas or taps, or lift the cooler...

Insulating keezer collar - best options

2x6 PVC fence rails stuffed with foam insulation. miters on the edges, silicone caulk. Works and looks great, no painting required.

Available “late hops” Pick one for bittering

I want to do an IIPA to help use up some aging hops. (Please don’t suggest I buy Magnum, CTZ, etc. for bittering. Not going to happen.) I have on hand El Dorado, Citra, Simcoe, which I would usually use for late additions. But this is an IIPA, and I want a conventional 2-3 oz bittering. They...

What BIAB brewing actually is (Mythbusting for traditionalists)

Bobby, I agree. But I can’t resist a couple comments with a objective to further expand BIAB for 3 vessel brewers. I designed and built an electric HERMS system A few years back. I designed it to be able to do fly sparging, batch sparging, and BIAB. Comments follow: 1. Almost all my brews are...

IPA recipe - just simcoe, citra and El Dorado

I was a little bit worried, because Citra an El Dorado are typically Hazy, juicy hops, and many posts say to mix with something more piney, dank, like Centennial, Cascade, Chinook, etc., when using in a west coast style. But I guess that Simcoe is somewhat piney, so maybe you are right. I've...

IPA recipe - just simcoe, citra and El Dorado

I'm doing an American IPA on the low alcohol range for the style, not a hazy. Has about a 2:1 ratio of Golden Promise to American 2 row, plus some crystal 80. I only have simcoe, citra, and El Dorado. Need to use up the Simcoe. Thinking about starting enough Simcoe at about 10-15 minutes to get...
