    Nottingham Yeast

I think I had a bad batch too. Didn't foam up on rehydration, pitched anyways, but shouldn't have. Not much went right with my New Year's Day beer here, but I did find this thread, and after 27 hrs of nothing I sprinkled some US-05 on top. Probably will be going before I go to bed tonight...

    trying to enjoy wheat beers

If you don't like wheat, but want to find one to like just cuz, try gumballhead from three floyd's. Not really like any other kind of wheat I've had... http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/26/9478/?sort=high&start=0

So.. I am throwing a beer tasting party

I like the 6 of each idea. Here are a few others: Pils: +1 for Victory Prima Pils, which is just too good to ignore Stout: O'hara's Celtic Stout, but there are alot of stouts that are pretty good. For the non-stout drinkers, I find that they often take a liking to Left Hand Milk Stout...

Aging beer: Facts, myths, and discussion

Inspired to put an amarillo pale ale (my 6th) in glass on day 21. Cold crash just began tonight. Already clear in secondary, and tasted great so hoping this beer turns around many weeks before anything else I've brewed.

British Brown Ale Aberdeen Brown Ale (NewCastle Clone) AG

I did a quick conversion to extract in beersmith, and it told me to use table sugar as a substitute for the flaked corn. Will that have flavor implications? I'm not familiar with flaked corn as an ingredient

prepare your GMR04 4.4CF minifridge for kegs!

This looks alot like the $50 kenmore I got off of craigslist and am doing the same thing to. I wasn't too gentle with the bend, but i didn't hear a hiss.... so hopefully it works. It did crack the paint where the pipe flattens out but then, I did see a bead of water freeze on the cold plate...

    LHBS Pet Peeves

Crappy hours. Also running out of simple grains like Chocolate Malt. Seriously... pay more attention to the stock - how do you run out of it??????

What beer would you describe as the beer that 'awakened' you...?

Combination of going to a wedding where my old college roommate made some very good wit and porter homebrews... and then trying both O'Hara's Irish Stout and Acme Pale ale on the same night. Since I was on vacation, I was able to read Palmer's online version of How to Brew and whalaa.

    Midwest Brew Tour

As someone who has lived in Milwaukee, Madison, Chicago (burbs), and now Cleveland... Skip Rock Bottom altogether. It's a chain (they even own the Cleveland Chop House, which is really a rock bottom)... and the beer is terrible. But, Great Lakes is quite good, and they brew alot more beer...

    Hoppy Ale suggestions - extract

I'm aware of the concept / how to create a hoppy beer....i've done more reading than brewing. But I wouldn't want to just give one a go hoping it turns out for gifting.... looking for a more tried and true recipe. So... with that in mind thanks for pointing out yours. It's actually not...

    Hoppy Ale suggestions - extract

I have a friend who only really likes hoppy beers and I would like to make a batch as a gift. Her favorite is Victory Prima Pils - which I simply can't replicate... hard to copy near perfection, plus I'm not equipped to make a lager, or an all-grain batch (yet - I think that is christmas...)...

    Leaving hydrometer in secondary

I just take about an 8oz sample from the bucket and put it in a graduated cylinder, and leave the hydrometer in there. Yeah, I lose a tad of my beer, so I guess it's a matter of personal preference but it works for me. I guess the fun I have watching the fermentation in the little cylinder...

What are you brewing this weekend?

Irish Red Ale as I type... going for a simple mass-drinkable beer since I'm waiting for my pumpkin. Alas, it's not turning out so simple as I couldn't find quite what I wanted at my LHBS and now I'm trying out the malt toasting thing. In the end, I'll have beer - hopefully even of the...

Autumn Seasonal Beer Thunderstruck Pumpkin Ale (AG and Extract versions)

Seems like alot of spice, no? I'm just hoping mine turns out... 1.5 weeks in secondary so far

Autumn Seasonal Beer Thunderstruck Pumpkin Ale (AG and Extract versions)

So I didn't see the pg 11. change until after mine was in primary. So rather than use a spice tea (which didn't work anyways...i'll get to why in a second) I just threw the cinnamon plus into the secondary. But, the problem I have with the cinnamon plus is that it doesn't mix well, at all...
