10 Gallons of Pumpkin Ale brewed up this weekend.

I tried to, but I couldn't find fresh pumpkins yet. When I asked a store employee about canned pumpkin he told me it wasn't in season yet. WTF?! It's canned, it doesn't ripen or go bad. There isn't a season. Oddly enough I asked him while standing next to a christmas display which was "in...

    Competition Anxiety

Bah! I kept checking the main page where it said check back shortly. I entered an IPA only because I happened to have bottles left over from before I started kegging. As expected I didn't place but I am looking forward to the feedback.

    Competition Anxiety

So, I entered my first competition this past week. It was the Boston Homebrew Competition on the 27th of February. I think I've checked the website for results every hour on the hour. Mind you, I have no delusions that I'm going to win or even place. I did it mainly for the experience and...

Good quality and Cheap Extract kits

I'll gladly throw up another vote for Austin Homebrew. I started out with their extract kits before going all grain and loved every one of them. As I type my wife is in the other room picking out some extract kits from AHS because she's getting the bug just from me loving homebrewing so much...

    Samuel Adams Noble Pils

I had it on tap at a local bar. I'm not really into pilsner, but this just wasn't good at all. There was something definitely a little off. I'll blame it on the lines and try to pick up a bottle somewhere.

    First mead try, quick question

Wow! That is exactly why I ask question before I do anything I'm unsure about. I have no problem with waiting so it's not a big deal. I'll just set the clarifying agents aside. Thanks for the help.

    First mead try, quick question

I have a strawberry melomel kit from AHS and I'm getting to the point in the instructions to stabilize and clarify. It states that after adding potassium metabisulphite and potassium sorbate that I should "de gass the mead for two minutes". What exactly is "de gass" I want to assume that I...

    Backyard Brewpub

This is the most amazing thing I have ever seen. So I've only got 19 more years to convince my wife to let me do this for our 25th. Wish me luck.

    OG consistently too high

I use a copper pipe with gallon and half gallon markings scored into it that I made specifically for this kettle. If my volume measurements aren't dead on they can't be off by more than a pint.

    OG consistently too high

I use a refractometer that was calibrated a couple weeks back but when I started getting high readings I also used a hydrometer and let the wort cool down to get a correct reading. Both displayed the same. Juanmoore, I had thought if I pulled more wort it would dilute the wort that I had...

    OG consistently too high

First, I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for all the input. I think what I'm getting from this boils down to the following: Be thankful for high efficiency, at least it's something I can work into the equation fairly easily. Adjust the grain bill when possible to account for the...

    OG consistently too high

I use Beersmith to keep track of my recipes. Even when I plug ingredients into that it shows a higher OG than what the kit sheet tells me but I end up easily higher than that also. I don't think it has any thing to do with a particular recipe since it has happened a few times now. I brewed...

    OG consistently too high

I just started AG 7 batches ago and the last few times I brewed my OG is much higher than what I thought it would be. I've been using AG kits and recipes I find here. I haven't dialed in my efficiencies yet but it looks like they run in the low to mid 80's. For instance, I made a cherry stout...

Fast fermenters for the impatient brewer

I know I'm not the only one with this problem. I drink faster than I brew and I can't get a good pipeline going. As much as I like going to the store and trying new beer, I don't like being forced to because I have nothing on tap. I tend to veer towards brews that take a little longer to...
