December 2013 New England Grain Buy

I might be able to help sort depending on how early it is. Just got a brand new 75 lb digital scale that I can bring as well. Sent from my Nexus 4 using Home Brew mobile app

Chlorine - Is 'any' too much?

I had been struggling with some persistent off-flavors in my beers for some time, especially in my lighter beers. I never could quite call it medicinal or band aid like, but plasticky. In some of the beers it was only noticeable in the burp. Anyway, chlorophenols sounded like the culprit. I had...

    New England Group Grain Buy

I'm definitely in. I might be adding some more bags for some local buddies too. I'll most likely be able to pitch in with sorting/weighing/loading etc.

How to control the boil with a heating element

I'm sorry, I don't know exactly how to do it - I am in the process of learning about it though. I am trying to decide if I should go with the BCS or not. My thoughts are: When programing the BCS process for boil you could have a state that takes the kettle temp up to some temp just below...

How to control the boil with a heating element

Just to be clear, if you get a BCS you don't need any additional control - it will do it all. You will need solid state relays for any power supply that needs to be switched on and off by the bcs (heaters, pumps, etc)

How to control the boil with a heating element

The BCS can control the duty cycle just like a PID. You just need to figure out what duty will maintain a good boil and tell it to do that. The simplest way to control a boil kettle is with a pulse width modulating controller (PWM) connected to a solid state relay. You manually dial the duty...

    Automation, good or bad?>Your experiences

I'm getting ready to build a system as well and have some of the same issues. I'm definitely getting a BCS though. I think I will automate in the future and having the proper controller and getting to know how it works for a while will make that transition much easier, if I do it. Plus I...

    Your top 3 beers

I'll go with St. Bernardus Abt. 12 Dogfish 90 (Can't get Pliny on east coast) Saison Dupont/Pilsner Urquell - I can't pick between these two.

Beer crafters fret over changes to Portland city water

I have some pretty good info on this because I know someone who works for the other Portland (Maine) water district. Both Portlands are part of a handful of public water districts that don't filter water because it is so clean they have a waiver. Both Portland's are affected by the EPA mandate...

    piraat ale recipe

I am quite sure that it is the Draak yeast. Northern brewer has a limited edition kit called "Golden Dragon" based on that yeast.

Maris Otter in a Belgian dark strong ale

Just to be clear, I have a 55 lb sack of pilsner malt, so I can go all pils if I want. I just think that the rich malty/biscuity character of MO might be nice. The bulk of the grist will be pilsner though. It will not be low alcohol, that's for sure. I'm shooting for 1.09 OG, 1.015 FG, around...

Maris Otter in a Belgian dark strong ale

Thanks for the welcome... I've been lurking for a while, so I know there is lots of knowledge on here and plenty of reason to get involved in the forum! Barring any good arguments against it, I'm pretty sure I'll brew it up as printed this weekend. Should be a nice treat to pop the cork on a...

Maris Otter in a Belgian dark strong ale

Hi all... My first post! So, I am planning to brew a Belgian Dark Strong. My primary inspiration is St. Bernardus 12, but I'm not going for a clone or anything. I have a bag of Franco-Belges pilsner and a bag of Fawcett Maris Otter. At first I was going to go with all pilsner malt plus...
