Denny Conn's Bourbon Vanilla Imperial Porter

Just got done brewing my 7th batch of this great recipe and am trying vanilla extract this time. I love a vanilla flavor and two beans just wasn't enough as it fades quickly I found. About a quarter tsp per 12 oz is enough of a subtle taste for me. I usually add 250 ml per 5 gallons of Makers...

Fermentation Temp Control, ambient or carboy?

The argument really boils down to what you believe the ambient temps should be held at. A cooling unit will bring the ambient temp far below the set point before it kicks off if the probe is placed anywhere but the air space (that's the lag time to get wort to cool down). Ice bags react very...

Fermentation Temp Control, ambient or carboy?

First you have to understand just what a temperature controller controls. Unlike what a lot of guys want to believe it does not control the temperature of the beer. It controls the temperature surrounding your fermentation vessel (ambient temp) whether it be air blowing over ice bottles or...

    Keezer Construction

After looking at several posts and a few YouTube videos I deciided to pull the plug and try to design and build my own version of this popular integrated chest freezer and kegerator (Keezer). The GE 7cuft chest freezer I chose went on sale for $198 at Home Depot with free shipping so I grabbed...

Too much foam...not sure what to do.

I used to have the same problem with my picnic taps until I lowered the serving psi and learned to depress the tap handle fully and not to let up until done with pour. Its most likely as previously stated that the beer is overcarbed. My tap line is 3/16 and 5 ft in length.

Best Way To Measure Water In Brew Kettle

I simply calculated the volume of water in the size kettle I have for every 1/8th inch of height and printed out a spreadsheet. I use a stainless steel ruler available at any stationary store and measure the height at the center of the kettle and voila! you know the volume easily at any point...

Are the refractometers on eBay worth their money?

No need to buy distilled water....make your own. Put 1/4" tap water in a cup (mines Pyrex) and place a small saucer over it and microwave for a minute. The distilled water will condense on the underside of the saucer and provide enough drops to place directly on your refractometer for...

    Gravity readings using the "thief"

Ok how about trying the simplest method to remove the bubbles around the hydrometer at the surface............use a straw to suck them away.........works every time.

    Keggle / false bottom question

Try adding a pickup to the inside of your keggle similar to this then do a whirlpool to collect the trub at the center. I've used this for two years now and very little trub ends up in the carboy. All fittings are available at Home Depot.

    A Technique to Filter Wort

The technique will work just fine, however, make sure that the filter bag does not hang above the bottling bucket beer as you will most assuredly be aerating your beer (not a good thing). Stick the siphon wand in the bag and keep it in the drained beer until completed draining.

    Inside coupling for Kettle valve?

    Good substitute for "cheesecloth"?

If you're handy with a sewing machine or know someone who is then use a common tight meshed material found in any fabric store in the "curtain" section called Voile. I had my wife sew up several hop bags with nylon draw strings. Works great and lasts long time and is strong and rinses clean.

Can I still use these malts?

Try them anyway....can't hurt...I've used grains that were in the refrigerator for >6 months and beer turned out fine.....just use viable yeast

    Moldy plate chiller...

Here is some information I gleaned from the Duda Diesel site pertaining to cleaning plate chillers. "Clogs need to be freed by running water in the opposite direction of the original flow. It's less about how long you do it and more about how much pressure and flow you can get through it. Low...

Ice Cream merchandiser as Fermentation Chamber

Gentleman, pay attention to Brewing Master's advice above about where to place the probe. If you think about it your controller is ONLY controlling the ambient temperature of the chamber. The temperature of the beer is ONLY indirectly a result of the temperature your cooling unit keeps the...

I also use a ladder to hang the bag from by using the simple devices shown. When ready to lift the bag first place the ladder over the kettle and slip the loop of the noose on your wrist then gather the top ends of the bag together and slip the noose down around the gathering and pull it...
