    Herms resources

You don't want to throttle the inlet of the pump so I actually start with the MLT valve fully open, prime the march pump, open the pump outlet about 1/4 of the way, start the pump then slowly open the valve on the outlet of the pump.

    Herms resources

I take maybe 20-30 sec to fully open the outlet and I use off the shelf 5500w water heater elements from either lowes or home depot.

    Herms resources

Here is my system. I am not sure of the flow rate, but I slowly open the valves and end up recircing at full flow for the march pump through a 50ft 1/2" stainless IC for the HERMS coil . I use a standard 12" perforatd false bottom and have not had any issues with compaction or reduced flow. I...

    element cover

Looks almost identical to mine. Not water tight, but it covers the screw terminals,is splash resistant, and makes it easy to change the element out after it dry fires.

    Closed-system pressurized fermentation technique!

I meant the SV is between the two gas ports. I like your train of thought on this. I think I am going to add the gelatin to the intended serving kegs, counter-pressure into the fermenting kegs and leave the serving kegs sealed up until the gelatin has had time to do its thing, then...

    Closed-system pressurized fermentation technique!

I've got 10 gal of BM's Centennial Blonde that just finished up pressurized fermentation. It is split between 2 cornies with my spunding valve connected to a tee between the two liquid ports. I am thinking about using gelatin, but am undecided about how to go about it. The way I see it I can: 1)...

    Correct power requirements to boil

The numbers are very close to what I see. I run my 5500w element at 70% for a 1.5 gal/hr boil off. Running the numbers show I need about 65. Add in another 5 for loss through the sides of the keg and it seems more than reasonable to me.

    My almost finished new rig

So far I love the bcs. I am just using it in manual mode right now. I haven't taken the time to program it yet. Like you said, it is nice being able to leave the area and still monitor temps. About 6 weeks ago, my buddies and I spent the majority of the brew day in the pool. You couldn't use...

    My almost finished new rig

Here are a couple of shots of my new rig getting ready to brew today. It is a BCS-460 controlled electric HERMS system that I designed to be fairly portable. The MLT is on the left and the HLT/BK on the right. My Android tablet controller on the far right. The march pump is mounted in the tool...

    Electric keggle conversion, several questions

    1. I used to run a 20ft extension cord with no problems. 2. Look on ebay for a 30 or 50 amp RV power cord, depending on how big an element you want to use. It's the cheapest way I've found. 3. I use a 5500w element and 40amp SSR for my electric keggle. I wouldn't go any smaller myself, but...

How long do you take to brew a batch?

I average 6 hours for 10 gallon all grain.

Introducing my: "WTF Else Could Go Wrong?" Ale...

I tried to brew once while my kids napped. Never again. After I thought nothing else could go wrong, I managed to drop and break the carboy and lose it all.

    Crushed false bottom

And Juan comes in off the top rope...well actually the ladder. Seriously, thanks for taking the time to set up a great demonstration. Sometimes seeing is the only way to believe.

Mash Tun Keggle - Beginner Build

This is what I do. It takes me about 30 seconds to get all the grain out.

First two batches of kegged beer taste like crap. Problem?

I had a similar problem and it ended up being a small chunk stuck in the black plastic tip of my auto-siphon. Everyting tasted great going into the keg, then about 3 days later the off flavors started.

    March Pump and SSR Troubles

I have processes set up for everything and all of my wiring and controls are hidden. That makes it difficult to run the pump manually.

    March Pump and SSR Troubles

That is pretty much what I was starting to think, a combination of low voltge and the normal starting current of a motor, causing the high amp readings. These are the ones I have tried so far. I also have a couple i got from auber ins somewhere I plan on trying...

    March Pump and SSR Troubles

Same result on top plug when controlled by ssr. I am thinking it is an issue with the lot of ssrs I have. I think I am going to order a relay board and try that. For 8 bucks, and I don't see what it would hurt.

    March Pump and SSR Troubles

I agree it should not be drawing that much current. Here is a quick and ugly wiring diagram of this section of my rig. The ground is connected just not shown. When the pump is plugged into the top plug which is always hot, it runs fine and draws the 1.45a. When I plug it into the bottom...
