This hobby is driving me to drink . . .

Yeah, I adjusted for temp on my gravity reading like I normally do. That's why I'm convinced I misread the preboil reading, because you're absolutely right that it's impossible to only move two points in an hour.

This hobby is driving me to drink . . .

Thanks everyone. On my next brew I'll redo my batch sparge method. Assuming that gets me some extra efficiency points, I'll next try to get a finer crush.

This hobby is driving me to drink . . .

I'll keep this as short as possible, and TIA for your help/advice/constructive criticism. I've done about 12 all grain batches over the past year. My problem is with overall efficiency, and it's getting to the point where it's taking some of the joy out of brewing. I use iHomebrew on my...

Cheap pump and FDA approved 12v 100c

Something to consider: I burned through a 1.5A power supply in about ten minutes. Pick up at least a 2A supply if you don't want to keep replacing them. Also, I have a 4A supply on my first pump, and with that the pump will move liquid at least 2-3 ft vertically, so go big on the supply.

Cheap pump and FDA approved 12v 100c

Once you have the power supply, cut the end off that has the plug for the speakers/ laptop/phone/whatever, and pull the two wires apart. You'll next need to determine which is the positive wire. It's usually the one with the writing on the sheathing. Just strip that wire and connect it to the...

Hollow lid on mash cooler = easy fly sparge setup?

Thanks for the input. After further examination, there are some "ridges" and "valleys" in the lid, so I would probably have to really flood the center valley in order to get any water over to the other valleys. And even then, I think the ridges may actually be touching the top of the lid...

Cheap pump and FDA approved 12v 100c

Thought I would post my experience with this pump. I'm running 1/2" line for the input, and 3/8" line for the out. I also found a 12V 1.5A power supply at Goodwill, and that seems to work fine. The pump can only push the liquid about 1.5' above the pump. This is a problem in my setup...

Hollow lid on mash cooler = easy fly sparge setup?

This may be difficult to explain, but I have a ten gal Rubbermaid cooler that I use for my mash tun. I'm also about to install a pump to get the water from my kettle to tun. The lid on my cooler appears hollow, and I want to get a fly sparge system going. I'm thinking about drilling a hole in...

Help with finding a common bad theme in my batches

The yeast on the first two batches was WLP001. I used the same slurry and made starters in both cases. On the third batch I made a starter from some Belgian ale yeast a friend gave me. I normally let my starters get going for 24-48 hrs before I pitch, but of course at the same temp that I...

Help with finding a common bad theme in my batches

Thanks for the replies. While I've not seen the temp get over 25C on the outside of the fermenter, I would say that the average temp is very close to 23C (73.4F), which if this is accurate, should be in the safe zone for the yeast. That said, my second batch, which probably averaged closer to...

Help with finding a common bad theme in my batches

I know the water from the tap is not great. I've only been using it for rinsing, however. I've been purchasing and using 5L jugs of water for everything else.

Help with finding a common bad theme in my batches

Hi everyone. I’ve read the threads, consulted the Google, and even prayed about it, but I’ve got a serious issue that I think needs some real expert advice. I recently cracked open a second bottle of my third and latest batch, and there is a disturbing trend the cause of which I cannot for...

    Bread recipe for used malt?

Thanks for that. I think I googled everything but "spent grain bread," but once I did that I found a slew of recipes.

    Bread recipe for used malt?

I thought I had read somewhere that you can use your spent mash in a bread recipe. Anyone know where I could find one?

    Can a carboy take a near-boiling wort??

    Gotcha. Thanks for the replies!

    Can a carboy take a near-boiling wort??

Hey all, first post here. I want to ferment in a carboy. Because carboys are so heavy duty I'm assuming they can take the high temperature of the wort, but I'm not sure. I was thinking of "priming" the carboy with very hot water before poring the wort in, just to be safe. Also, should I...
