Does anyone brew during a cold winter?

I checked my yeast and it does say that it needs to be between 20c and 24c so in this case I think I need to bring the temperature of the liquid up. Perhaps the heating pad will be a good move as suggested.

Does anyone brew during a cold winter?

Hi Guys, Where I am we are going through some very cold weather (it was -3c this morning) and the house is quite cold. I just measured the temp of my latest all grain and it's at 17c. This is too cold for a good fermentation? Should I invest in some way of keeping the liquid warm? My...

Hi All, I have two batches that, after two weeks, are still bubbling. They are not bubbling often, but there is activity. The OG of one was 1.038 and it is now 1.010 The OG of the other was 1.048 and it is now 1.014 Do you think these are these ready to be bottled? Thanks. Pwn.

The yeast was new, well to me at least. I only bought it two weeks before. Oxygen might be a good call though.

    Question about O.G & S.G

Thanks for your replies! Some good information and knowledge here. I've read somewhere that Honey is a good option as not all of the sugars are fermentable. Is that right? Interesting. I did not know this. I mashed my last brew at 65c.

    Mash time

Hi, There is something I don't understand about mashing. If I mash for 1 hour, then recirculate, then drain, the liquid is sitting with the grain for much longer than one hour but a lot of the guides etc that I have read say you need to mash for an hour. On Sunday I mashed for one hour...

Cant get one of my latest batches to start

Hi guys, On Sunday I brewed two 40 pint batches - one from a kit and one all grain. The kit is fermenting nicely and there is a 'crust' on top. :D My all grain isn't doing anything! I'm assuming the temperature is okay since the kit beer seems to be fine and I'm also fermenting...

    Question about O.G & S.G

Hi all, I have some questions about gravity and fermentation and would really appreciate any advice. Am I right in saying that there is a simple concept that the larger the difference between the OG and FG the higher the alcohol content? Can you control how low the gravity goes during...

Home made mash tun keeps blocking

Hi, Thanks to everyone that replied. I can confirm: 1. I was mashing 3.7kg Pale Malt, 300g Crystal Malt, 300g Wheat Malt with 12 litres of water 2. I opened the tap all the way 3. I was not using a tube on the end of the tap 4. The slots were cut with a dremel disk and I had them...

Home made mash tun keeps blocking

Hi everyone, After looking at lots of different ways to do it, I decided to make my own mash tun using a Thermos cooler and a copper manifold with slots cut in to allow for drainage. I had the opportunity to use it for the first time today, but it hasn't gone well at all! I let the...

Have I made a dangerous ginger beer??

Thanks for all the replies. I'll try and answer each one... 1. I'm pretty confident my equipment is okay 2. I can try drawing a sample and testing that 3. It's totally submerged. The top of the hydrometer is about 2 inches under the surface 4. No, there is no crack.

Have I made a dangerous ginger beer??

Hi Guys, Recently I thought I'd try making some ginger beer. I made a mix using ginger, honey, molasses, lemon juice and sugar and put it all into a 1 gallon demijohn. The gravity before I added the yeast was 1.040. I've been busy lately and not done anything with it for 2 and a half weeks...

    My brew is very sweet

Thanks for your advice. I'm sure you can tell that I'm new to all grain! I think I would rather throw it away and start again before waiting weeks for it to be ready and then finding out that it's no good. However, I'm learning all the time, and now I've learned that the final product will...

    My brew is very sweet

Great. I won't worry then. This is the first time I have tried choosing the ingredients myself and I thought I might have screwed up already! I don't remember the last batch tasting as sweet as this one. Thanks for such a quick reply.
