    Free hops in Roxboro, NC

I'm not sure it's worth the drive but can be knocked off and the roots trimmed to whatever size is needed.

    Free hops in Roxboro, NC

I have done some clearing in the garden and have five adult bines free for the taking (home brew samples are always appreciated). I have two Cascade, one Magnum and two Nugget. I dug these up from the garden with an excavator and had to cut roots the size of a garden hose so... no, I will not...

Immersion Chiller ( 3 intermeshed Ring design)

I wouldn't be surprised if the second half of coil is doing nothing more than restricting your flow rate. The water is probably pretty close to your wort temp by the time it gets half way through so your dishwasher pump idea could help quite a bit if you can get the cooling water through...

CO2 Regulator Advice - need to purchase a new one

The guys description of the regulators does not make much sense "2 guage regulator grey@ 100psi, red regulator@ 160psi". My tanks usually read about 800 psi until almost gone so you'd certainly need a 1st stage that can handle more than 160psi, but again the word description just does not make...

15# tank ran empty, now what?

Keep an eye on the 1st stage gauge. Mine do not seem to be linear. Mine tend to stay high like 600-800psi for most of the tank and then drop over the course of a couple kegs to zero. So, when you see it start to drop get ready for an empty tank.

    Rhizome/root cutting question

Yes, you do not want the tiny little roots at the perimeter of the plant. There is just not enough energy stored up for it to survive sending out growth above and below ground. Roots larger than the diameter of a pencil work best. Come spring you can also take cuttings from the growing...

    which hops to grow?

I am in a similar but different situation. I'm not too far (NC near Durham) and have grown Cascade, Sterling, Northern Brewer, Magnum and Nugget. In the end the Cascade and Nugget are the only two to thrive and produce in usable quantity. I'm looking for a suggestion for another variety or...

1,000 watt heater too hot in fridge?

I use a heating pad to keep my fermentation fridge warm. It has provided enough heat for my full size fridge in a garage that gets down into the low-mid 40's. Just make sure you get the older style that does not have an automatic off feature.

    How Do Kegs Work

Some people even shorten the pick-up tube so they pick up less sediment from the bottom of the keg. I leave mine full length. Once the keg goes into the fridge I don't touch it. With a new keg there may be one glass worth clouded with yeast & sediment but after that the beer runs clear as...

    Hop growing

There is nothing too difficult about growing hops. You may search through this part of the forum to find out what varieties grow best in your area. Here in NC I can't stop Cascade and Nugget from growing and producing like mad, but I have had much less luck with Northern Brewer, Sterling and...

    Yeast Starter Directions

So simple. Thanks. I've been fishing around with a sanitized surgical tool. It's a bit like an adult game of Operation.

    Yeast Starter Directions

OK, my problem is: How do I get the stir bar out of the flask? After my recent troubles with Nottingham I even do a starter/proof with dry yeasts. I'd love to just swirl the flask to get the yeast suspended and dump into the wort but I have not found a good way to retrieve the stir bar.

    New Hop Trellis (in action!!!)

Cellular cored PVC pipe is designed to carry liquids. It's water pipe not structural tubing. I'm sure the IP's trellis worked because of the lines coming down diagonally give it support just like the guy wires on a tall radio/TV tower. PVC withstands the sun very well, does not need painting...

    Unclear on "Correct" keezer temps!

This is part of a long running "discussion" between my wife and I. She likes her beer as cold as possible and as fizzy as possible. I prefer my beer in the low 40's. My beer fridge is in the basement and is set to 38f. By the time a draw a beer and walk upstairs it has warmed just enough to...

    NanoBrewery build

I can't wait to see pictures of the 7bbl setup. I'm if you will get more sleep once you get the big rig up and running.

Large scale hop growing in the southeast

NC State has a research hops garden. I wonder if any universities in SC have the same. I would contact them (even NC State) and start learning.

what can one plant with hops? (herbs/spices)

Last year I tried planting other things with (within 6') of my hops. The hops needed very regular pruning to prevent them from overgrowing everything else. I went away on vacation for a week and when I got home the hops had sent out their arms grabbed the raspberries and used them as a...

    Growing over a privacy fence?

First I would use something stronger than twine unless you support the twine every couple feet. Adult hops bines can get rather heavy especially after a rain. Hops will naturally try to grow straight up so during the peak growing period you will have to train the bine every couple days...
