    Wire mesh or CPVC ?

This has probably been brought up before, but when building a MLT from a rectangular cooler, what do you feel would make a better manifold, the wire mesh type or the slotted CPVC type? To me anyways, it looks like the CPVC manifold may be more efficient but I have no experience with either one...

You know you're becoming hooked when....

I've only been in the hobby for a few months now, but I received the "sign" that I was becoming hooked when I was at my daughters college volleyball game last night and I started eyeing their big Gatorade cooler thinking what an excellent mash tun it would make... Anyone else have a "sign"...

    Any reason to overpitch?

I'm brewing up another extract batch soon (northern brewers cream ale) and will be pitching the dry yeast that comes with the kit (Safale US-05). Is there any benefit to buying another pack and double pitching, or is the single pack with the kit sufficient?

    My Kolsch transformed itself

I brewed a "Brewer's Best" Kolsch kit back in May. 3 Weeks Primary, 1 week secondary. I tried a bottle after two weeks in the bottle and it was..uh..Awful! I gave it another week and tried another. Still awful. Another week and yep, still awful. Now, by awful I mean this...Up front it smelled...

Help put my own extract "kit" together

I've done a couple of Brewers Best kits (American Amber and Kolsch) and for my next act, I would like to piece together my own kit using extract. Not sure what style I'm looking at but it would be an ale with a profile something like this-- 1. Color-- Amber (9 or 10 Lovibond) 2. Strong hop...

    Is this brew pot ok

I've been researching for a 10 Gallon brew pot for my inevitable move to AG. I found this one but either: a.) I've found a really awesome deal and I should snag it immediately b.) It is a thin walled piece of junk and I should stay away Does anyone have any experience with this brand...

    MLT Cooler preferences

I'm beginning to put together my equipment to move into AG brewing. My first dilemma is deciding on a cooler type for my MLT. Can't decide whether to go for the rectangular or cylindrical cooler type. I think that I will be doing 5 gallon batches if this might influence a decision either way...

    The Term "Hoppy Beer"

My tastes tend to lean towards a less bitter bite in my beer. I like brews that are not real high on the IBU scale. I know that hops add bitterness when added early and taste/smell when added later. When someone says a beer is very "hoppy" does that generally mean bitter hoppy or taste/smell...

    Grain shelf life

I'm thinking about making the move to AG pretty soon and was wondering about the freshness of grains and their shelf life. As I will probably be buying most of my ingredients mail order, I didn't know if I should be concerned with receiving stale grains? Do grains get stale? Can anyone recommend...

    Things were going fine, until....

My brand new digital thermometer crapped out. I was brewing up my second batch today (a Kolsch extract kit) and everything was going perfectly. Steeping grains at a constant 160-162 degrees, according to my new digital thermometer. It is a Mainstays with probe bought at Wally World. When it...

    Transferring wort to fermenter

Getting ready to brew my second extract kit and got thinking about what issues I had with the first batch and how I could improve my technique. Both kit instructions for the hop additions say to just dump the hops (pellets) right in. Then they say that when the wort is transferred to the...

How much difference would this make?

I posted a thread a while ago regarding my second attemp ever at doing an extract batch (my first was a very successful American Amber). It is a "Brewer's Best Kolsch" kit. I thought that I would change up the included Nottingham yeast with a WLP029 Kolsch yeast. I still think that I might, but...

Changing yeast for my second batch

I recently made my first extract batch of "Brewer's Best American Amber". I was happy with the kit so I just picked up a Kolsch kit. The kit comes with a packet of Nottingham, but I thought I might try using an actual Kolsch yeast (WLp209). Is it ok to just shake up the tube and pitch it, or...

    Hi from Western New York

Hi everyone. My name is Scott and I'm quickly becoming interested in this hobby. I've just bottled my first batch (an extract kit) and looking forward to many more. Great forum here, and I'm sure I'll be tapping into its resources often.

    Top off secondary?

I just finished making my first batch of homeBrew. I made an American Amber from Brewer's Best. I decided to rack to a 5 gallon carboy after the primary completed to clarify. I filled the primary to the 5 gallon mark, but when I racked it to the secondary, there was a considerable amount of...
