    Rusty Brewpot

Hello, I took my brewpot off the shelf today and it appears that it has a lot of rust. I have a few questions, Is there any way to salvage this thing? Can I still brew with it? How can I prevent this in the future? I usually clean my pot with chlorox. Could this be the problem? Thanks!

    Airlock question

Do you have any tubing? If so I'd try and rig up a blow off tube. Otherwise I would just put the cap on the airlock and use it like normal. Unfortunately you won't be able to see any bubble though. Hopefully someone with more experience comes along and helps.

    Wood Chips

I only boiled them for five minutes or so in purified water. Unfortunately I didn't know about the microfilm bag. The thin film that I am talking about sinks when I move the carboy and eventually floats back to the top. I just took a hydro sample and there were several of these white chunks...

    Wood Chips

I added wood chips and hops to an IPA in secondary about 5 days ago. Now there are chunks floating in it and a creamy looking substance covering the top. I don't think the chunks are pieces of the wood, but I guess it's possible. Anyways, is it infected or does this happen when you add the...

    Carbonation?

I've never tried it sooner than a week. I can say that at one week there was a reasonable amount of carbonation, but the carbonation will keep improving for several weeks. However, it doesn't hurt to give it a try early to you can see how the beer changes as it ages.

I'm Going To Have To Hurt You Now

It's nice that you can post something like that on the forum and people get it. In 99% of the internet slums everyone would just be confused.

    Am I screwed?

So I have an IPA that has spent 3.5 weeks in primary. I transferred it to secondary yesterday. As I was taking the carboy cap off to take a smell, one of the small caps that cover the holes in the cap fell off and into my secondary fermenter. What should I do? Bottle it immediately before I...

I don't get it.... I don't get it at all...

I agree. Getting off the lawn mower on a hot day and then drinking a stout does not appeal to me.

    Glass carboy for primary fermenting?

I don't think you run any more of a risk of blow off by using a carboy instead of an ale pail. If you are really worried about blow off you should rig up a blow off tube. Good luck!

    Air bubbles and bottling?

Maybe I am misunderstanding, but your kit came with a bottle filler that doesn't fit? If this is the case, what you probably need to do is cut off a bit of your siphoning tub and attach one end to the spigot and one end to the bottle filler. That is what I had to do to my kit. The fillers...

    S-shaped vs 3-piece airlock

Advantages? Although I'm new to brewing I have some expertise in this area. The S airlock is more amusing to watch. It's that simple.

    Aging Pumpkin Ale

So I want to brew a pumpkin ale and let it age from now until early October. Seeing as this will be a fairly long aging period (relative to what I normally do), I would like some advice on what the best course of aging would be. Would it be best to age it in the secondary vessel for most of...

    18 days and still fermenting

I have an Octane IPA in primary right now and it has been bubbling for two weeks. The bubbling doesn't necessarily mean fermentation is taking place. However, if your gravity continues to fall fermentation is definitely still under way. Normally I don't think you're supposed to transfer to...

    My last final....

That's funny because the whole time I've been studying for finals I've been using this website to take breaks from studying. Unfortunately the "short breaks" turn into about forty five minutes of me sifting through threads. Good luck on the project!

    Into Secondary

If you want to be even more precise there is this handy little calculator. Rooftop Brew » ABV and Gravity Calculator It sounds like maybe you purchased Better Bottles. I just bought some too. Although I haven't used them yet, I've heard nothing but good things. I think we'll be OK.

    Brew Progression

I know this is a matter of personal preference, but I would still like some input from the combined wisdom of HBT. As you guys initially began brewing, did just kind of make one of every different type of beer to try new things, or did you try and perfect a few simple recipes? I'm just getting...

What styles can you not drink?

Spaten is the only beer that I had trouble choking down. However, this was at the Epcot center in Orlando. Maybe the keg was skunked? I hate to knock German beer making, but it had an after taste like a burnt tootsy roll. Like I said though, I only had one and it was in a theme park after...

Storage/cooling/shielding tip: 5 gal better bottle fits inside 6 gal bottling bucket

On a side note, would this decrease the amount of oxygen sneaking into your brew through an ale pail? I realize there is oxygen dissolved in water, but is it less than the ambient oxygen in good ole fashioned air? I don't worry about oxidation seeing as I usually don't spend long enough in the...

    Most impatient brewer ever

Yeah, a funny story for your friends to tell at your funeral after you DIE when a round of glass shrapnel rocks you in the face while you're putting your clothes in the dryer.
