I use the top QD's also. I like them fine. Need to be cleaned well to keep them from sticking when they dry after brewing. 1/2'' only from what I've found. But works fine with a hose clamp on silicone tubing. The cam locks are cheaper, I believe, and probably work just as well.

Drink it!

Hot water and Oxiclean. Soak overnight. Inspect. Brush if necessary. Rinse well. If that doesn't work. Don't waste your time on that bottle.

On the lid. As you said it does not need to be leakproof. This would be a good place for a weldless connection. I wouldn't spend the money on the tri clamp sytem though they do look cool. Fixing a hole. Welding is always the best choice. You could cut a plug to fit the hole and weld that in...

One more. Borrowing tools. Couple of the night shift guys that will not buy thier own tools. I ride a bicycle most of the time and find tools on the ground all of the time. I give them to 'em.
