Michigan SOLD [Detroit, MI Area] Full Homebrewery Setup for Sale (50A Panel, BK, MT, RIMS, HLT, pumps, conical, etc)For Sale, $1500

Hi all! About five years ago I moved from Ohio to Michigan, and I haven't touched my brewing equipment since. So, it's time to get it all out of the basement and get it into a home that will actually use it. $1500 FIRM gets you the whole shebang. Cash preferred, but Venmo or PayPal works too...

    Risk of infected starter?

Hey guys, thanks for your input. I usually use fermcap in my starter when I boil the DME, but this time I used purchased canned starter... I'll know for next time... The starter still looked/smelled OK last night. I stuck it in the keggerator to cold crash, and I'll check it again on...

    Risk of infected starter?

Alright, hive mind... Let's hear your opinions. This coming weekend I'm making a Old Ale (OG 1.100). Monday night I made a 3L starter with Omega Labs British Ale II (OYL-007) in a 5L flask. I put in on a stir plate in my basement, and capped it with a foam stopper. Tuesday night at 5pm it...

    Mash floated while sparging???

SmellyGlove, thanks for the info. day_trippr, I have the same question... I wondering, would it be beneficial to pause the pump for a minute or two in the middle of the mash? If there is trapped air under the grain bed, it would give it time to escape and then reset the grain bed before the...

    Mash floated while sparging???

Hi all, I brewed this past weekend, and had a really weird problem that I've never encountered. I have a 15gal kettle tun with a RIMs tube and chugger pump. This recipe has a really long mash/recirc (~3 hours including step time), and it had all gone normally. The grain bed was nice and...

Aquarium/Hydroponics Chiller for Temp Control & Cold Crashing?

Hey Guys, thanks for the responses... Ended up being a moot point, the household budget controller has nixed my plans. :(

Aquarium/Hydroponics Chiller for Temp Control & Cold Crashing?

Hey all, I’m looking into building a glycol chiller out of an aquarium or hydroponics chiller, with a 10gal cooler as a glycol reservoir. I’m chilling a 7gal Spike conical located in my basement, which can get into the mid 70s in summer. Two main questions: 1) What size chiller do I need...

Terrible efficiency with new mash tun.

    How long do you recommend?

Terrible efficiency with new mash tun.

Another Doug with good info! Thank you! I'll try modifying my process with more water in the mash tun and fly sparing more evenly and slowly. If that doesn't work, I'll give batch sparging a try and see what happens. Thanks again!

Terrible efficiency with new mash tun.

Man, that is a lot of good info! Thank you! I do have my own grain mill, and it's set to 0.035. Or at least it was a couple years ago, I've been lazy and haven't checked it in a long time. Should probably do that. For my next brew I'll make sure I end up with a couple inches of water on top...

Terrible efficiency with new mash tun.

Doug, Just got home and looked at BeerSmith. My memory was close, but not perfect. Mash thickness: 1.45qt/lb Mash Tun Addition: 0.71gal (RIMs, hoses, etc that get drained into the kettle) Deadspace: 0.3 gal Pre-boil calculated gravity: 1.055 (@ 75% brewhouse efficiency, 83.5% mash efficiency)...

Terrible efficiency with new mash tun.

Unfortunately I'm at work, so I can't see my exact numbers in BeerSmith. I think I had it set for a 6 gal batch. My mash thickness was ~1.4, and between my RIMs and hoses I have about 0.75 gal of volume. I disconnect all of it and drain it into the kettle when I start to sparge. There is...

Terrible efficiency with new mash tun.

Thanks for the reply! During recirc I only had 1/4~1/2" of wort above the grain, because I didn't want to make my mash too thin. I had ~1" during sparging. Do you think that could have done it? I measured the gravity with a refractometer. After the first low reading I checked the calibration...

Terrible efficiency with new mash tun.

Honestly, I'm not quite sure which forum to put this post in... But for right now, I'm going to go with the "equipment" forum. I brewed today for the first time with my new Spike 15gal mash tun. Super duper nice piece of equipement, but I only got ~41% mash efficiency. Beersmith was...

    Imperial Red Recipe Critique

Thanks again guys. I'm actually NOT trying to build an IPA. I'm brewing this with some guys from work, and they wanted an "Imperial Red Ale" that isn't too hoppy (one guy doesn't like hoppy beers). Otherwise, I'd leave the hops where they're at... SO, try number two. I deleted the...

    Imperial Red Recipe Critique

Thanks for the responses. I'm thinking to drop the amber, Crystal, and carapils, and reduce the buscuit to 8oz. Then add 8oz each of Munich and Melanoidin. You guys think that would still be too malty? The BU/GU ratio is a new concept for me, thanks for introducing me to it. Basically, I was...

    Imperial Red Recipe Critique

Hey all, I'm looking to do an Imperial Red, with a good balance of maltiness and hoppiness. I haven't used Falconers in a long time, but I was thinking it's be a good hop for this. Not sure if the mix of Maris Otter and Biscuit will be TOO malty... Take a look at my recipe and let me know...

Wicked Weed Dark Age stout recipe?

A few years ago I had the privilege of drinking a rum barrel aged version of Wicked Weed's Dark Age stout. And man, was it glorious. I would like to try and make something similar, so I currently have a couple bottles of rum in a 5gal bourbon barrel to condition it. Now all I need is the recipe...

    Caramely Belgian Strong Dark

That's ridiculous. What temp did you mash at? I think I'm going to stick with the 545. I think the spiciness will go well with the barrel aging.
