Using CounterFlow Chiller for first time.

Ok, I've done some a lot of searching and reading, but I want to ask a few final questions before using my CFC for the first time. A little background...I had a 50' IC of 1/2" tubing that I converted to a counterflow chiller. So, first things first...I have yet to clean this bad boy. I...

Is your LHBS taking advantage of the Shortage?

I recently went to a LHBS near me to buy ingredients. I left with some Iodophor... I hate that place first of all, because you have to buy the grain in their special increments. For instance, I can't get 5oz of Roasted Barley...I have to buy a whole pound. The Problem is, they are charging...

SS Braid with Tubing inside - More Uniform Draining?

Hey you peoples... Just a quick question. I'm building my mash tun using a 70qt Coleman Xtreme. I was debating a manifold(copper or cpvc) and a braid. I have great results with my 5 gallon round cooler with braid...so anyway, here is my idea. I am going to batch sparge, so let's get...

New 3 Piece Stainless Steel Ball Valves

I just bought 2 new Stainless Steel ball valves on ebay for $27 shipped. These are a good deal right? Seems that the Homebrew stores charge about $25-27 for ONE + Shipping. I looked up the manufacturer MCF and found that FRS66TEI is the Product code and it means that: F = Full Port RS =...

    Keggle is getting a spigot!

I just got done drilling a hole in my keggle for the weld-b-gone bulkhead fitting... Here is a pic of the keggle with the hole, and the keggle's best friend, the mash tun: I used a 3/4" hole saw and a dremel to widen the hole a little. I have brass valve and nipples, that I have to pickle...

Help me decide on a "system" please

Ok, I am trying to build a 10 gallon system, but I really dont have a lot of extra money to do it. So I am proposing 2 methods and I'd like everyone's feedback on which one they think I should choose. I currently have a Keggle and a SP10 Burner, with a 5 gallon round cooler MLT. I am...

    Making a Custom False Bottom

Ok, I recently got a couple 50 QT Igloo Coolers to use for my new MLT and HLT. I have been thinking about what kind of manifold/braid/false bottom I wanted to use. I have always batch sparged, but I think I will be fly sparging with this setup. And since I'm fly sparging I'd rather not...

What can I expect from this recipe?

Hey! I got some stuff from the LHBS. I had other plans, but when I saw they had Cascade, I made some spur of the moment changes...hope this will be a good tasting beer. Im not sure what to expect tho. I have never used Biscuit Malt, so can anyone give me a heads up on what this will be like...

Want to save time bottling - Nervous about cleaning

I have read several times that if you rinse your bottles out after each use that you can just sanitize them and they are good to go. I always rinse with hot water after using mine....then I store them in the garage. Problem is there are all types of critters that get in my garage (insects)...

    Crash Cooling before Bottling???

I am bottling my latest batch this weekend and I was considering Crash cooling the primary fermenter before doing so. Is this not a good idea for bottling though? Will too much yeast fall out of suspension and not allow for carbonation in the bottle? Thanks.

2nd AG in the Bucket - Pics and Recipe

Well, here are some pics and the recipe from my last AG. This was my second AG attempt and I hit all the temps pretty closely. My OG was 1.060, so that's only 3 points higher than expected. Quickquestion....hop matter in the hydrometer tube should not affect the reading, correct? Anyway...

Need Beer in 5 weeks - Bottle or Leave in Primary

I was bored today (as usual) so I was thinking what would be better. If you brewed today, and you needed this beer to be bottled and ready in 5 weeks, would it be better to leave in the primary for 3 weeks, and bottle for 2, or primary for 2 weeks and bottle for 3. I usually leave my beers...

Bayou Classic SP10 - Regulator Setting

I just have a quick Q for anyone that uses the Bayou Classic SP10. How open do you run the regulator? My last brew(first time with the SP10) I ran it at about a half turn open. The thing turns about 3 full turns to fully open, so I was just curious if this was normal. I have a really...

    Mashing/Brewing on Seperate Days

I was staring at the computer screen when I wondered if anyone has done this and if there are any problems with it. I know it isnt really that practical, but lets just say you are doing a 5 gallon batch and have an extra 10 gallon cooler or a 7.9 gallon bucket with lid to fill overnight or...

Oxiclean - My container says DO NOT SOAK METALS

ok, I know a lot of people use oxiclean, and I just started using it. I was about to clean my keg with it as several people do, when I read the box of the package...it states Metals must not be soaked and must be rinsed immediately and thoroughly. Ok, so what's the deal with that??? I...

Can bottling buckets handle boiling water?

I need to know if the standard bottling buckets can handle boiling water. I ask this because I can't spend any more money on equipment right now and I need a HLT. I batch sparge and use a 5 gallon round cooler for MLT...so I was thinking.... I will heat up my mash water in my keggle at...
