    Dry Mead

Hello. I've been brewing beer and cider for about a year now, and decided to try making a mead. I didn't really follow one specific recipe, but just remembered a few ingredients from several recipes I've come across online. What I used was 12lbs of clover honey, filtered water so must was...

    Alcohol Testing Device

Hello. I've searched for a while, but is there any sort of device out there that can determine the alcohol content of a beverage? I'm sure it's possible to create such a device cheaply, due to all the breathalizers out there... I'm assuming it'd use the same technology. If anyone knows of...

    Budweiser and day fresh

I've been thinking about this since I started brewing beer. If beer gets better with age (at least the beers I brewed have), why is Budweiser pitching this "day fresh" campaign? Wouldn't they be be better off saying "Aged one year" or something like that, as opposed to their current strategy...

    Cheatin cider...

I had an extra packet of Ale yeast, and nothing to ferment with it.... so I went and bought 6 gallons of apple juice and mixed 'em all together. I'm hoping to come out with a drink like Hornsby's or Strong Bow... but it smells too yeasty right now. But anyhow... is this a cheating way of...

    Harvesting yeast

Hello. I just picked up 4-pack of Duvel from my local liquor store. Since Duvel is bottle conditioned, there's a layer of yeast at the bottom of the bottles. Is there a way I can harvest this yeast to use in my own beer, and grow enough to make it pitchable? Or would that not be a good idea?

    being sick dangerous to beer?

This may sound like a dumb question.... but.... I've had the flu for the past week now. I have a batch of beer that's been ready to bottle for a week, and I'd really like to get it in the bottles. The thing is, I've been afraid to bottle the beer for a couple of reasons. 1. I could infect...

    Duvel recipe (extract)

Anyone know a good extract recipe for the Belgian beer, Duvel? I'm a newbie and haven't experimented with all-grain yet, but that's a few months down the road. I found most other recipe's for beers I liked but am not finding an extract recipe for Duvel. Thanks for reading!

    liquid condensing in airlock?

I'm new to this brewing thing but I'm a little puzzled at what's going on. Here's the situation. I brewed up another batch a week ago, today I noticed the airlock had quit bubbling. So I pry off my lid and to take a taste of the brew and a hydrometer reading. First of all, the brew...

    mashing, steeping.. what?

Everything I've brewed so far I've used malt extracts. I'd like to learn how to "start from scratch"... meaning using all raw ingredients. I live in barley country and barley is easy to find (just throw a stone in any direction and you'll hit a grain elevator). How do I turn these raw grains...

    Yeast(?) on bottom of bottles?

I've noticed a sediment on the bottom of my bottles after a week or two of aging. I'm assuming this is yeast, after doing a little research. Is there any way to avoid this buildup? I'm assuming there must be some way, as commercial beers do not have this layer of yeast (or whatever it is)...

    honey in beer

I've been thinking of adding 2 cups of honey to my boiling wort for some extra sugar for the yeast to munch on. I'll be using 6 pounds of liquid malt and about 1.5 lbs of crystalized malts. Has anyone used honey for extra sugar? As far as hops go I was planning on using 1 1/2 oz of Perle for...

    20 days and still fermenting?

Hi. I'm brand new to beer making, but I think there's something wrong. I bought a mahogony coast kit to help me get started. I followed the directions to the "T", ecept for the fermenting temperature. The directions call for a 77F temp, and I live in a cold region so the highest I can get...
