    Stout Conical VS Ebay Conical

    Hi, I just got a stout 7.3 conical. It seems great, but I would love to come up with a way to build a racking arm for it? As anybody done this on a stout fermenter? I have butterfly valves with mine. Thanks.

    Transfer with pellicle?

    Hey everybody. I currently have my first wild beer in the secondary. It's been in there since about September '10 and is smelling and tasting sour. I added some oak spirals about three weeks ago and was planning on transferring to a keg in another three weeks, force carbing and then bottling for...

    Sample Testing - How/How Often

    Don't bother testing it until visual signs of fermentation have stopped. Once it looks like it might be done, then go ahead and test to see if you are raring your final gravity. Remember, when it first looks like it has stopped it hasn't. It has just slowed. Also, don't test it too often...

    My first yeast starter

    Ideally you would pitch your starter at High Krausen when the yeast are actively fermenting the starter wort and ready to rip through your batch.

    Heatstick = awesome!

    I have only had it about a year or so( whenever I started this thread is when I built it). I was thinking that maybe part of the element was exposed to the air during the boil. Is it possible this could have caused it?

    Heatstick = awesome!

    Brewed yesterday with my heatstick that I have used many times before. This time when I pulled out the heatstick after the boil it was completely black and the element is easily pliable. It still works but for some reason I can easily bend it with one hand where before it was very stiff...

    Flavor difference between 2-row and Pilsner

    @ hopdreams Start with the BJCP (Beer Judge Certification Program) website. www.bjcp.org. Their website as a ton of great information on the different flavors in grains (ass well as hops and flavors produced by different yeasts).

    Flavor difference between 2-row and Pilsner

    One thing to take into account when using pilsner malt is that you probably want to do a 90 minute boil instead of a 60 minute one. One difference between these grains is the temperature at which they are malted. Pilsner is malted very low, and this low malt temp leaves a significant amount of...

    Heatstick = awesome!

    I use my heat stick with zinc plated nut. I don't think it makes any difference, although this is not an expert opinion so if you get sick don't come crying to me. That said, I made an american pale ale with my zinc nutted heatstick and just came in second at a competition so it doesn't seem...

    Favor to ask of a West Coaster

    Oh, I plan on making a batch, but I would also like to have a commercial example on hand. It's nice to have and also would like to be able to compare a few to my own version.

    Favor to ask of a West Coaster

    So, last week I had my first little taste of Pliny the Elder by Russian River. Loved it. The only thing I didn't like about it was that I was limited to only 2 3oz samples. So, the favor.... if somebody out on the west coast that can buy Pliny at their local package store would be willing...

    How much does a Brew Pot matter?

    My bad. That was a little early for me. Disregard everything I said. I'd say go with the cheaper, bigger one.

    How much does a Brew Pot matter?

    The difference in those two pots isn't really quality. It's that one of them is 7.5 gallons and the other is only 5 gallons. With the 7.5 gallon pot, you might be able to do some extract full boils which would be really nice and help to increase the quality of your results. If you can afford...

    Colorado Beer Law

    I wasn't trying to offend anybody... it was just a little good natured ribbing. I can see why that didn't come across well in the post, so please don't take offense.

    Colorado Beer Law

    I agree. I hope that the micros flourish, clearly. But I do believe that the legislature is responsible for making laws that do not give some business unfair competitive advantages over other businesses.

    Get Your Russian River tonight in Cambridge MA!!

    + 1,000,000 I was pretty pissed last night because at first I was stuck outside in line hoping to get in. I ended up bailing on the whole thing and going to Cambridge Brewing Company instead. But, when I was walking back to the subway I decided to stop by Lord Hobos again and check out the...
