Beer in carboy for a year...

Just bottled 2 x 5g carboys which lay forgotten in a dark corner of my basement for almost exactly a year. Think it will turn out ok? I pitched 1/3 packet of new yeast into my bottling bucket both times. As an experiment I took some wort which had been in my fridge (also for a year) and...

What is growing in my beer/wort?!

There are hundreds of these little disks that are 1-2 mm in diameter floating at or just under the surface of my stout. WARNING: LARGE IMAGE Lilly Pad Bug? This is not full beer, I had a stuck fermentation from 1.042 to 1.04 from too high a mash temp. I had put it aside for a few weeks...

    I just got 94% efficiency!

I grind at my LHBS, with the gap at its closest setting. Hulls come through fine. No tannins yet. I just grind slowly and evenly and it comes out near flour, but still managable. Vorlauf for 30 minutes or more at a trickle. I normally cycle the whole batch at least once before sparging...

Would you use a carboy that has had a dead mouse in it for 10+ years?

Found a carboy in a relatives basement that has been the final resting place for two of the critters for a looong time. Would you use it? If its never going to be safe for brewing, can I use it for something else?

    Stuck Fermentation at 1.042

Brewed this stout 2 1/2 weeks ago. I was racking it to a secondary to clear out hops/trub floating around. Took a reading and I am still at 1.042?! I am expecting 1.010 - 1.012 It tastes great, but my OG was only a few points higher ~1.046. 7# Pale 3# Roasted 2# Flaked Barley 30 min...

Has anyone heard of this beer? (Schellenbier)

A relative just came back from Germany and one of the stops was what I assume is called the Muhlenbrau brewey? They brought me back a very nice 1 litter flip top bottle (looks like an oversized maple syrup bottle) of a Dunkel Bock that says Schellenbier on the label and Muhlenbrau on the flip...

100% Wheat compared to 100% Barley

So being new to homebrew and wanting to learn the right way, my brewing group has made a few batches with 100% of certain malts to find the exact profiles they have. One of the things which has surprised us was the huge difference in wheat compared to barley. The barley beers have all tasted...

Dextrose is good to take after working out

In my ongoing theme of exercise related threads (see https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f39/co2-fermenters-possible-health-effects-111096/ ) I thought I would point out that dextrose is a recommended post workout source of carb's and is packaged as such in many health/vitamin stores. Since I...

CO2 from fermenters - possible health effects?

Because it has been the tail end of winter, I still had plastic over all my windows for heat conservation. Since about 2 weeks ago (when my first batch went into the fermentor) when I work out I have been getting extremely painful headaches. Google said that it could be from incorrect...

    Hello from Long Island

A few friends and I just started brewing after an intense brainstorm as to what would be a productive way to spend our free time. We believe in being authentic, so we jumped right into the deep end with all-grain. We managed a half batch of wheat beer (our groups favorite style) with a...
