    Are my calculations right?

I put 20# Honey to 4 gallons water to be OG 1.126 which is pretty much JAO levels upscaled to 5.7 gallons. I put that weight to 1.7 gallons, not 2 so thats where the divergence happens most likely. To get 1.170 you should have added only 2.5 gallons of water to the honey so I don't think you...

    Have I gone wrong?

I work in metric so I'd say your actually in close to 11% ABV territory with that attenuation of the champers yeast. A kilogram of honey is actually 2.2046244......etc. pounds. To get a US Gallon using that amount of honey with water your starting gravity is actually supposed to be close to...

    First time mazer/mead maker

Just to help you track your Mead's progress, 15 Pounds of honey would have been 1.26 gallons, with 3.73 gallons of water to make up the 5.00 gallons of total volume into the fermenter. The resulting starting gravity would have been 1.1073 or very close thereabouts.

Who has the best racking gear? Prices?

I look at the auto siphon and apart from the "I broke my ... posts" I wonder if it will last me a long enough time. Stock standard siphons are no issue. I santise them and rinse them with hot tap water and in the process its already fully primed with water and ready to go for hot wort...

Good info. How do you regulate your flame?

    Eucalyptus Honey

Im in Australia and buying all my honeys at a local farm from a 1,200+ hive primary producer. Non pastuerised and fresh from the harvest. All the rules are out the window on dark and light honeys, Ive had darks with delicate flavor and lights with strong flavor. My ironbark eucalypt...

Jet burners, do NG need larger s

Excuse the question but couldnt seem to find an answer but in larger NG nozzle jet burners, do you need larger gas pipes to service them with enough flow or does standard house pipes have enough diameter. I have a 26 gallon pot I want to bring to the boil rapidly but also wonder if the NG...

Who has the best racking gear? Prices?

Our plastic is just polyethylene tubes. "Soft as" straight off the shelf and as soon as it hits hot wort it bends a deforms. No auto siphons here though and although I did look at them initially Id worry about getting any replacement parts, especially that since USPO has dropped iternational...

    Eucalyptus Honey

If you see a web site that says don't use eucalypt honeys (tons of different varietals) or even this that say dont use bread yeast. Run! the other way and never visit that place or listen to that persons advice again. Since moving to Australia I have been brewing meads with both eucalyptus...

Who has the best racking gear? Prices?

Hey guys. I'm in need of some decent racking gear. Locally there is a lot of plastic sold and we know what happens when that hits heat. I have the folks flying down here from the ol' USA so I'd like to get them to bring down some quality racking gear. Who has the best selection and best...

What's your favorite/best yeast for mead?

US-05, an amazing yeast for Meads, Ales, and for doing fake Lagers. D-47 SN-11 (local country variant I suspect is just repackaged EC-1118 for local market) I use the first two almost as much as each other on equal basis, only occasionally use SN-11.

    Porter Braggot

It is exciting when formulating. Braggots are not new though, they date back in written records to the late 1300's in Chaucer's England and in Ireland back to the 1200's. Braggot were simply made by blending spices and herbs with mead and beer, to produce a strong concoction with uncommon...

    Porter Braggot

No one defines ratios. Its a simple volumetric evaluation of each component of the recipes put up. I started volumetric evaluation as part of curiosity once I finished reading all of Ken Schramms recipes and start programming my own Mead calculation engines for my brewing program which are all...

    Porter Braggot

The dilution ratio for most braggot recipes for the honey component is usually around 1 part to 6 parts and when honey is the only fermentable in straight meads 1 to 3 is average. That said, if you want big all around then an OG of 1.120 can be had with around 13 lbs of crushed malts to 9 lbs...

    Honey and Mead

I've drawn up my own plans based upon the ones you can get from backyardhive.com which is a completely different hive to what you can buy. I was going to go the whole kit and kaboodle into Langstroth hives until I started reading BeeGuardian.org - Honey bee, Pollination, Bee Guardian and...

    Beer yeast in mead.

I just put down 11 gallons of Mead using US-05 dry ale yeast. Its one of the better beer yeasts to use for Meads.

Any one use an air pump?

I use a big ol' 3 foot paint stirrer from the hardware store. Sanitised and inserted into my cordless drill. Makes mixing in a whole bucket of honey into water a breeze. And I end up with a massive 3 to 4 inch layer of bubbly oxygenated foam from all that whipping. I work big though, my primary...

    Two recipes! check em out!

Wyeast 4632 has an ABV of 18% I have a similar recipe conversion I did for an 18% and was OG at 1138 What finish SG are you hoping to finish at? Are you making an ABV adjustment for Nutrient? I am planning a SNA / 1/3rd / DAP & Nutrient Additions so I vaguely remember I had to bump the...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

Can anyone give a straight reading on tree top on it's own as I'd like to take a reading on what I can source locally for juices.

    Which refractometer?

Didn't get email update about your post, need to check my settings. I ended up buying from a high volume reseller in Hong Kong, closer to the factory: eBay Australia Shop - easylifeproduct Works out better since I'm in Oz and ships internationally. China -> HK -> Oz instead of China -> HK ->...
