    cheaper DME/LME substitute ??

Might I suggest calling your local homebrew store and seeing what they can get you the 50-55# bags for? Sure, you can pay $150 online, but the shipping is steep. My local store wanted a $50 premium ($185) on a bag, but the store in the next town ordered it for his cost ($130). I picked up...

    how long until fermentation starts?

no need to panic. My air lock is "wierd". I had forgotten, a couple months ago I had a beer with some foam and no activity in the air lock (I had used dry yeast then). I removed the air lock and stopper and put it back in and it started going nuts. I just tried that with this batch, and sure...

    how long until fermentation starts?

No, I realize that, I guess my point is, I was trying to save some $$ by only buying one pack of yeast...It will be a little disheartening (plus my wife might not be so happy) if I end up spending another $7 on a yeast pack. I am trying to bring my cost/batch down and reusing yeast seamed like...

    how long until fermentation starts?

Friday night I brewed a wheat beer and activated my wyeast pack ~6:00 pm. By midnight there was zero expansion in the yeast pack. By morning the yeast pack had expanded to about half of its capable size, but I didn't have time to wait on it (I wa heading out of town). I went ahead and pitched...

    Buying some 5 gal corni's?

I would check out brewers discount get the $12.50 corni kegs and a $2 gasket set. Look at the rest of their online catalog to find the rest of your needs. (You are on the east coast so shipping might kill this deal for you)

How long does your cO2 last?

I just used a pair of groove joint pliers to remove the in post (groovelock or tongue and groove, not sure the official name) I read somewhere 2 corny's per 1lb of CO2, I have yet to test that theory as I lost my first two tanks to leaks...this one seems to be going steady, going on 3 weeks...

    Coopers Lager...problems

    - Yes I used the dry yeast - Temp was low 60's - Yes I used table sugar (per instructions) - OG 1.042, FG 1.006 Definately astringency (BINGO! I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to describe the taste...sucking on a teabag is exactly right) Is there any way to "fix" this? I am...

    Coopers Lager...problems

I brewed a batch a couple weeks ago (needed a cheap brew for my 5 tap kegerator) and it tastes terrible. Undrinkable terrible... (Primary for 1 week, secondary for 1 week, day four in keg) It tasted terrible when I tried the hydrometer sample when I trasferred from primary, but it was...

    CO2 Manifold

I ended up using 3 "Y" splitters to give me 4 gas lines...probably wasn't the best way to go, but I had a Y and two shut off valves already, so I figured it was cheaper to go this route.

    Serving Temperature?

What is your ideal serving temperature for kegged beer? I have my fridge turned down as far as it will go before shutting off, and the internal temp is in the mid 30's. I think the fridge is late 70's/early 80's model (original color was avacado, then painted brown by the previous...

    Co2 refills in MINUTES

I actually benefitted from swapping. I received a beat-up 5lb. tank that hadn't been used in 10 years from a friend of mine. Took it to the welding supply store and exchanged it for a near new aluminum tank for $8 filled. I can upgrade to a 10lb. tank for an additional $35. (It's only $10.25...

    Faucet selection... opinions needed

If you can wait for the Ventmatics to become available, definately get those. If you need faucets sooner, grab the Perlicks. Get them from superprod.com. (Search for Part# 851300 if the link doesn't work). The best price I could find for these.

    Bottling advice?

I hated bottling, that said, it seems to work much faster with at least one person helping. You could switch to 22oz bottles and cut your work in half. Another key is a decent capper. I finally gave it up and put together a 5-tap kegerator (only waiting on the drip tray). It has renewed my...

    Quick disconect for my CO2

Lowe's is the best option for those on a tight budget. A pack that includes four disconnect plugs and 1 quick release coupler is $6, and individual couplers are $2.50. I put the quick release on my regulator and made a seperate hose (longer) for my out-of-fridge CO2 uses.

    regulator question

They both look like this http://www.beveragefactory.com/draftbeer/regulator/double/larger342.shtml Should it look like this when done? http://www.northernbrewer.com/pics/fullsize/dbl-gas-reg.jpg

    regulator question

Thanks for the replies. With limited funds for this hobby, buying a secondary isn't feasible at this time. I will keep an eye out for a cheap 2nd CO2 tank since I have the additional regulator. Setting at 12psi should work fine for now, eventually I would like to have some root beer on tap as...
