reminder to be careful when handling carboys

I use the carboy handles when working with empty carboys. They work especially well when washing them out to keep a good grip on them. Once full, I keep the carboys in plastic milk crates I picked up from Dollar General. It makes them easy to handle, and supports the weight of the carboy...

Home Brew Secrets for the Married Man

Same here. The ONLY batch I ever did inside was my very first batch, and years later I still am reminded of how it "stunk up the whole damn house" every single time I brew. After that, I was banished to the outdoors. But, on the plus side, a propane burner works much better than electric...

    Maybe oxidized

The floating white patches I have seen before floating in the secondary. These many times are actually very tiny bubbles clumped together. At first, they look like little bits of white gunk floating there, but if you look very closely you can usually see the bubbles.

    What brands use recappable bottles?

My most recently bottled batch has "Wicked" stamped on about 3/4 of the bottles. The wife likes Pete's Wicked Strawberry Blond, so I accumulated quite a few of these.

    Sanitizer injecctor in bottle tree?

I have one that I use for wine bottles. It works great for those, but I have not tried it on my beer bottles yet. It sprays a LOT of water into the bottle with each pump. With the wine bottles, I use a sulfite solution. Since you don't want live yeast in a bottle of wine (unless you are...

    Sanatize Option on Dishwasher

I thoroughly clean each bottle after I empty it. It is very easy to rinse the gunk out of the bottles as soon as the beer is emptied from it. Then, I use the dishwasher on the bottles just before bottling to give them a final rinse and to dry them. In my opinion, if it has been hot enough in...

    moldy refrigerator

If you don't have a pressure washer, then scrounge up a regular old spray bottle and go to it. The bleach will kill the mold, and you can rinse with a water hose. If you have some stubborn spots, just use a nylon brush.

    Anyone try these?

I have the Mini-Jet filter for my wine making, but have not used it on beer. When using it on wine, the wine must already be fairly clear (as in you can see through the carboy full of wine) before you filter it. In my limited beer making, I have yet to see a carboy of beer as clear as a carboy...

Best Practice? Cleaning & Storing Tubing

Well, the question was "Best practice? Cleaning and Storing", so I answered with emphasis on the storing aspect. I doubt that anything particularly harmful from the air compressor would survive the sterilization before I use them again.

Best Practice? Cleaning & Storing Tubing

I run hot water through the tubing, follow with sanitizing solution of either Potassium Metabisulfite or Sodium Metabisulfite (stuff I have for sanitizing my wine equipment), then another rinse with hot water. Then, if motivated enough, will go out to the shed and blast through a couple times...

    use of guinness bottles??

I give the bottles a sharp flick to lodge the widget in the neck, then grab the bit sticking out with my teeth and pull. They come right out.
