    A good source for rare earth (neodymium) magnets is www.magnet4less.com I use the ND021 button style magnets for the stir plates I build, they are 1/8" x 3/8"

    www.magnet4less.com is also a good place for magnets, they have a large variety of shapes and sizes. I use the 1/8" x 3/8" button style magnets, 2 for each stir plate. +1 to Accidic, it's important to get ones that are polarized axially. In my case, through the 1/8" dimension.

    Yeast infection, the center pin is usually positive, so in this case you want to wire it to the red wire.

    The white wire is the tachometer sensor wire. Not needed, just tape and store the end out of the way.

    I have seen workable designs that use just one HDD magnet. I suggest you give that a try because with one magnet you won't have the spacing and pole interference issues that develop using two magnets.     The power output of the heating element varies according to the square of the applied voltage. So, the "divide by four rule" applies only if you reduce the applied voltage to 1/2. If you reduced the applied voltage to 1/3, your power output would be reduced to 1/9, and so on.

    Murphyslaw, Take a look at the "instructions" page on my website www.stirstarters.com, there is some useful information there on building your own stir plate. Maybe you can use this to figure out why your first attempt didn't work. Does the fan spin at all when you apply power?
