    Wort Transfer Help?

I have been plagued with the same problem since I started brewing several years ago. Getting the wort to the carboy without plugging things up. I have been using a homemade Stainless braid screen (about 3 feet long) attached in a circular fashion to a copper dip tube on my kettle. I am...

    Cloudy beer...Infection???

I made a 10 gal batch of all grain IPA in January which was rather slow to finish due to too low of a pitching rate. The batch was split into 2 6 gal carboys and fermented at around 67deg. I pitched one packet of Safeale 05 in one carboy and for the other I used some safeale 05 (not enough)...

Old Box Fan = Motor for MaltMill?

Here's a picture of my recent build. I used the motor off an old dryer I had in the barn. Works nice and slow also. I seem to have increased my efficiency from 70 to 80% since using the motor instead of my variable speed drill. It does require a little kick start to get the mill going, but...

    Dryer motor for barley crusher?

Has anyone used an old clothes dryer motor to power their barley crusher? I know the dryer is 220v but can the motor run on 110? Any insight would be appreciated.

    quick beersmith question

Hi, Does anyone know if Beersmith as the ability to automatically take ingredients out of inventory when they are used in a recipe? If so, is there a way to turn it on or off? So far it isn't doing it for me. Thanks

What do you do with your spent grains?

Ha Ha! That did sound a little funny. The dogs ate all the grain. I had the misfortune of kneeling in a pile of grain poo last weekend. Talk about smelling sour, especially when it finds the one hole in the knee of your jeans and makes skin contact! I suppose I could have recycled them again!

How many brews from Propane Tank

Don't use the propane exchange. I traded 2 tanks in at walmart just so I could upgrade the tanks to the newer fittings and get some nicer looking tanks. Didn't realize that I was paying $18 for only 15lb of gas and tanks with spray paint over rust! I can have mine filled 20lbs at the COOP for...

FG of 1st all grain lower than expected.

I always calibrate both thermometers in boiling water before I brew. They have an adjustment on the back..which I'm sure most do.

    Carb day!

Here's a picture of my first all grain in the kettle with a faulty propane burner putting out soot like a steam train! It took hours to clean up all the black soot from the garage, clothes, kitchen floor, my face, hands and equipment. Never again. I tried cleaning the burner but had no luck...

What do you do with your spent grains?

I was feeding them to our sheep, but the Great Pyrenese dogs kept eating them. Now I am planning on trying the dog treats or composting.

Fortunately I have my Grandfather's homemade capper as a backup.

FG of 1st all grain lower than expected.

OK,thanks. I used 170 deg water to mash with which game me an exactly 152 deg mash. I am brewing a smoked poter this weekend and should probably not shoot for such a dry beer. Should I increase the mash water temp a couple of degrees only? I am using a 10gal rubbermaid water cooler with a...

FG of 1st all grain lower than expected.

I brewed my first all grain (an ESB) last weekend. The OG was 1.055 and it was mashed at 152 deg F. I checked the gravity this morning and it was 1.005! This is by far the lowest gravity I have had since brewing. My extract brews were usually 1.011ish. Is this due to the switch to all grain...

    Chunky Yeast

I've tasted it. It's a great beer. In fact, if he will loan me the recipe, I intend to make a batch myself! Yeast doesn't bother me, but it is a little chunky.

How long can a fruit wine keep?

I store the wines in the basement (unheated) on their sides in a wine rack. The corks should have stayed wet although when I first started making wine I was using the conglomerate corks. Maybe they just don't hold up? I also have some excellent wines from 07 (I made a bunch that year!)

How long can a fruit wine keep?

It has been an excellent tasting wine until now, so I know it's not yeast sediment. These were worm like strings and the taste was not worth drinking. I poured the bottles out. At least we had 19 good ones prior to this! Just wondering if it was too old. I have older wines that seem ok.
