    Earwig damage to hops

I was having absolutely no issues with pests in my hops until the last week and a half. It has gotten very warm (85-90) in Chicagoland, and I started noticing large almost dime size chunks missing from my hop leaves. Then I went out to check on them yesterday and captured some of the culprits...

Nøgne Ø Porter (a new favorite!)

if you get a chance check out their 1st or 2nd edition dark horizon's. They are huge RIS's, and have a price to match. However I got the opportunity to sample both of them side by side and they were amazing. Super complex RIS, and different than the large RIS and double imperial stouts you find...

    Free hops and plants!!

did you get actual transplanted plants? or rhizomes from which you will grow your plants? I would be very interested to hear how transplanted hops will grow in a different environment and soil composition. However, I guess that is not much different than harvesting rhizomes and planting them...

    Specific gravity of dextrose

Ok I have debated posting this, but I want to make sure I am doing this math correctly so bear with me. I searched for this issue because I thought it was brought up before but after a few hours I gave up. My question is if my original gravity for Apfelwein (without adding dextrose) was...

    Dark Lord Day 2009

Come on guys, honestly selling it for those crazy prices that are being charged on Ebay and Craigslist? First of all it is against the wishes of the 3Floyds crew who got pissed about the auctioning of Golden Tickets. More importantly we should be getting these beers for the love or enjoyment of...

    Dark Lord Day 2009

that picture of the last guy in the kilt is one of the guys from Free The Hops, the Alabama crew dedicated to getting their crazy beer laws modified. His name on Beer Advocate and Rate Beer is Uncle Jedi, good guy and his crew was handing out samples of Olde Towne Hefeweizen and Good People...

    Vote: Best Midwest Craft Brewery

    1) Bells 2) Founders 3) Three Floyds 4) New Glarus 5) Dark Horse 6) Goose Island 7) Two Brothers (under rated but solid to great beers) Three Floyds makes the best beer, but are more expensive than either Bells or Founders.

    Popped an Orval Tonight

any problems with re using the Orval bottles for bottle conditioned beers? I was kind of concerned that even with proper cleaning / sanitizing these bottles still might have some Brett left over. Thoughts?

New Safbrew WB-06 Wheat Beer Yeast

Again just bumping this old thread for my own selfish purpose... Would like to know (based on my american wheat / hefe recipe given earlier) if i should use one or two packets of yeast. Also can i rehydrate for better results? the package indicates to simply "sprinkle on wort" but with...

New Safbrew WB-06 Wheat Beer Yeast

    Weissbier Paulaner-style Hefe Weizen

went to my LHBS yesterday and picked up the ingredients for this brew, but they did not have either of the yeasts you suggested in, nor any other liquid hefe yeasts. So I got 2 packets of dry Safbrew WB-06. Everything online says it gives a traditional hefeweizen character, but just wanted to...

    Cleaning metal strainer (Square collapsible)

Hey everyone, question about what to do with my metal colander / strainer that I just used for the first time. First of all when straining out my latest brew (Brewers Best Holiday Ale) it got filled with hop / spice debris and clogged about 4/5 of the way done with adding my wort to...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

you can use the search this thread feature to better answer this question, but yes people have used brown and white sugar before with good results, and people have also used nottingham with good results. Less dry than the product that comes out of using montrachet, less attentuation, and a...

    Tron's Pretzel Things

made this recipe tonight for UofI unoffical (huge St. Paticks day party done before the actual day so all the bars can make huge $$$...) and I added 1 cup of cashews and used olive oil instead ofveggie oil, and I also only used one package of dry ranch (im cheap and want to make 2 batches), and...

    Victory Hop Wallup

Hop Wallup is just a different beast of a DIPA, kind of like Founders Double Trouble. Much more of an earthy piney taste than the citrusy grapefruit bombs that the West coast is putting out. I personally like this DIPA with a little age on it (I know, but it brings out the malt kind of like a 90...
