    Yards Tavern Spruce Recipe

I had no luck finding a recipe online that I was happy with. So I took the Brewing Classic Styles book and started going through it. I decided to go with the Scottish Export recipe. I used a spruce extract and poured a few glasses when racking to the keg and tried various percentages of...

    Lactobacillus in Salami

Hi everyone. I am going to make my first batch of salami pretty soon, and am super stoked. I have been making various fresh sausages for 4 years, but now it is time to start with the dry cured delicacies. I am using a Len Poli recipe (those who don't know should check out his website)...

    Yards Tavern Spruce Recipe

Hi All, I 'm looking for a recipe for the Yards Tavern Spruce ale. I really enjoy it, and like any beer I enjoy want to reproduce it on my own. I searched the forum, but didn't find any hits. I was thinking of making a basic scotch ale with a bit higher OG, then adding the spruce tips and...

    Poor Attenuation

Hi Folks, I have read about, and experienced, extract brews having poor attenuation. Not so much as to render the beer undrinkable (if that's even possible), but enough that the beer isn't quite what it could be. After four batches of being ~.008 off from the expected FG I was getting...

    Nature vs. Nurture?

I don't know about soft music, but if you get some big pumpin' base songs with a large speaker right next to the fermenter the sound waves could help agitate your beer and the yeasties! I've found that US-05 is partial to Baby Got Back :D

Pitched yeast, got bubbles, but for less than expected

I thought I had this problem on my last batch.... the darn thing just wasn't bubbling.... I tried to ignore it because I have heard from HBT that "bubbles don't mean anything" Revvy is right. They don't. ...and in my case I didn't have quite enough vodka in the airlock... I topped it off...

Green Beer? Well its not green, well mabe it is

RDWHAHB. Time cures all green beer. I just had a scare with two batches.... white floaty things in secondary... a color change.... and a completely different taste profile (was convinced I had made 10 gallons of vinegar, or had a lacto infection). It was bottled so I figured I'd just...

    averaging 46-48 bottles...

There are many tips in Revvy et al bottling guide thread. My personal favorite is on page 15. I saw it somewhere on here, but can't find it now. Anyway, I just bought an elbow piece that screws directly to the spigot in my bottling bucket. You can get more beer in the bottle with this...

    RDWHAHB pays off

I brewed a wheat several weeks ago, and the fermentation seemed to have stalled. I waited, and waited, but the SG just wouldn't move. I decided to remove the lid and use my long plastic brewing spoon to stir everything up and get the yeast back in suspension. I washed the spoon and...

    First Tripel - Kit Bashing

Sound advice. Thanks. See, all I need is another brewer to tell me my ideas are stupid and I'll stay on track to make good beer. I'll also make a larger starter.

    First Tripel - Kit Bashing

Balance is an important aspect to remember. When it's all said and done making a 4 gallon batch is probably the best idea. However, I need to crash and burn to learn; so I am going to try adding more sugars anyway. :cross: In an effort to keep balance I will add a proportional amount...

    First Tripel - Kit Bashing

Howdy, I just got my Belgian Tripel kit from Midwest, and I am already tossing ideas around to change it. I really want something at the high end of the OG for the style (1.095). However, the kit, as is, comes out with a 1.074 OG. For the style, what is best to add to boost the...
