    Maximizing Efficiency when Batch Sparging

So in some cases you might start the boil with, say, 8.5 gallons of total runnings for a 5 gallon batch and just boil, boil, boil...... ?

    Moving Hops

I did a similar "moved there, then decided here, then split them"-sort of mess. It's very apparent that they didn't care much for it, but if you keep them watered they should survive. And note that this is just an investment in the years to come since they probably (maybe?) will not flower...

Man do I ever feel guilty!!!!!

...which reminds me, did I ruin it and should I dump it? It's been a good 12 hours and it doesn't taste like beer yet. What happens if I put it back on the stove, add some water, and then stomp in it like wine makers do to their grapes. Will that help any? :D

Man do I ever feel guilty!!!!!

I just gotta get something off my chest... Yesterday found a clone on the web and didn't feel like doing any recipe convesion and just didn't feel like investing my time doing the whole shebang so at the brewshop I bought......... wait for it......... extract. My total cost was probably a...

    Double IPA Pliny The Bastid

I've recently found a couple sellers of Elder and Blind Pig. I'm actually enjoying the dryness of Pig a little more. But both are damn good. Russian River makes some damn fine products! Anybody know much about Younger? I seem to recall it is a "triple IPA". Opinions as compared to Elder...

Problem with smack pack yesterday; hope it turns out ok.

I like it! Kinda reminds me of a military MRE. Heck, the solidiers gotta have something to go along with their 'spaghetti with meat sauce'.

Problem with smack pack yesterday; hope it turns out ok.

Ya know... the more I think of this, and recall you are exactly correct since I've read this on the package too, why would they have this instruction? I understand allowing it to "start" by letting it sit for a few hours, but how can it also be viable "immediately"? Furthermore, what's the...

Problem with smack pack yesterday; hope it turns out ok.

It had a twin, clear plastic package thing. Sorry, that's not a very clear description. It basically was two distinct "chambers" but hooked together. One of them was ruptured but I don't know what was in it.... maybe the yeast or maybe some nutrient? It was the other "chamber" that was not...

Problem with smack pack yesterday; hope it turns out ok.

Yeah, I did this. I started with smacking, then allowed it to sit while I brewed. After I was done (3 or 4 hrs), I got the pack and realized that it wasn't fully swelled; just a little puffy.

My new best friend, the crystal hop!

Did an AG clone of Rogue's Brutal Bitter yesterday. Used a half pound, entirely of crystal hops. Man did it smell good. After the session was over I cracked open a Russian River Blind Pig.... BINGO, my friend the crystal again! (Honestly I don't really know if they really use crystal, but...

Problem with smack pack yesterday; hope it turns out ok.

Brewed yesterday and started by activating a Wyeast Pacman smack pack. It sat for a few hours but only got partially "puffy". Figured the house was just a little on the cool side so I wrote it off. When it came time to pitch I openned the pack, pitched, and then noticed one of the little...

    Chocolate Indulgence Stout

Funny... I am a week away from tapping a keg of a choc stout. I believe it was an Edwort recipe, but I took some liberties in the chocolate department. Should be very good. I've been counting the days remaining for the conditioning. :)

Any good locally found brew shops?

Nope, no prices on anything. And asking you get various replies from her. Seems as much a mystery to her as it is the customer. :(

Batch sparging: am I alone in my technique?

Only a couple AG's under the belt so I'd like to correct my technique before I'm set in my ways. For clarity, I'm mashing and batch sparging in a rectangle cooler with (effectively) a stainless braided line as a screen.... the very typical setup. So, I'm wondering.... Simply put, when I...

Any good locally found brew shops?

Yet one more bump, and to be fair an update. Went into this shop the other day and it's MUCH nicer! They have changed the layout of the store and things are quite a bit more organized and easier to find. Thanks to the owners who are making some good strides; I will gladly visit them again...

Reusing mashed grains for second batch?

Ah... ask and ye shall receive: Parti-gyle - Home Brewing Wiki Thanks Orange! Seems to me instead of making "one big, one small", you could collect all the runnings and mix the lot together (provided you have a large enough vessle). I would think it would be just as good to start...

Reusing mashed grains for second batch?

Do some of you continue to sparge/extract after your initial boil volume is collected and with these secondary runnings make a second brew? Seems I recall somebody talking about this technique... what is this called? If so, how to to prevent tannins when you are sparging the hell out of the...
