60qt. Ice Cube Mash Tun Build - $cheap and simple

If it is your first ag batch, I would estimate a lower efficiency just to give you room for mistakes. I think that 75% is very possible once you have some experience under your belt with AG, but its easy to make a mistake when you are trying a new process. I only got 55% efficiency on my first...

I would try a 1/2" locknut like this one. or you could try a 1/2" bulkhead. Let us know what works.

Left keg in hot garage, now it is sour? (but sour in a good way)

I brewed a 10-gallon batch of pilsner in June. We drank all but half a kegs worth in August. I rotated the beers on tap and set aside the keg to let if lager a little bit more. Well, I ended up needing the space in my fermentation/lager chamber and set the pilz keg next to the cooler in the...

60qt. Ice Cube Mash Tun Build - $cheap and simple

The largest batch I have brewed in this setup was 10 gallons of IPA using about 25 pounds of grain. I had plenty of room in the cooler left.

Deep Six Brewing System - v3.0

I saw one of those large kegs the other day when I was sitting in a McDonald's drive-thru. It was in the back of a McDonald's semi-truck with a long hose running from the keg to the inside of the restaurant. It couldn't tell what was running through the hose... my thought is hot grease? or...

Looks good BigJason! In response to Bobby_M, I also preheat my mash tun substantially hotter than required for strike. After a few minutes I'll stir up the water and check the temp to see how close it is to strike. I usually dough in at a couple of degrees hotter than calculated because i...

Counter Flow Chiller -$50 shipped - Bobbym's design

I made two of these when building one for myself since it is so much cheaper to purchase the 3/8" copper tubing in 50' sections. I use one and I am selling the other. I have used the other one to cool off several batches and this design is very effective. My system is gravity fed, so it...

Can I store my yeast in my fermenter instead of the fridge?

I'm getting ready to wash yeast for the first time. I don't have much room in the fridge right now, so is there any reason I couldn't just keep the yeast in my fermenter at 65F temp? What could go wrong if I store it at 65F degrees? Thanks!

60qt. Ice Cube Mash Tun Build - $cheap and simple

Eric, I didn't glue my cpvc together and it works just fine and is really easy to clean. You have to be careful though, I managed to disconnect one of the sections during my last batch.

Ki-ri-n: the copper manifold looks nice!

60qt. Ice Cube Mash Tun Build - $cheap and simple

Just an update: I've done three batches with this build. Once I learned how to properly sparge, I have been getting around 73% efficiency with very little wort loss in the bottom of the tun. Last batch I somehow managed to disconnect the cpvc joint from the valve during my sparge. It was...

I couldn't think of a better way to spend some x-mas money! I think the Coleman extreme would work just fine. I know a number of other brewers on HBT have utilized that cooler. It appears that the extreme may have a little bit more insulation which would aid in holding the mash temps a little...

uh oh. I just read that the sparge should last 30 minutes+. Humm. could my 2 minute sparge effect efficiency?

60qt. Ice Cube Mash Tun Build - $cheap and simple

I brewed my first batch in this setup today and wilserbrewer is totally correct that the mash behaved very differently from the mash. For my 5 gallon batch the starting mash temp for me was about 155 and over an hour it dropped to 151... so 4 degrees over an hour. My overall efficiency...

Just did a dry run through the system that is illustrated in the first post. good news and bad news.... good news... I only had 3 cups of water left in the MT after it drained through the manifold and up through the elbow. I think there was a small leak somewhere in the elbow because I would...

    Yuri's Brew Yurt (Hut)

Excellent! I personally think this rig should be gold plated instead of powder-coated.
