About to order a bunch of hop plants, need some guidance

just still too young to have the full flavour id say. leaving them longer might help, but i noticed that even if the plant has a good crop, if its not yet fully established, like 3 years and really strong, they still smell like grass clippings...

About to order a bunch of hop plants, need some guidance

this is sad news, I was so looking forward to see what the varieties looked like. its possible some still may survive, give them a little time. also , your surrounding area looks perfect for hops, nettles means good soil, poplar I think has a sort of symbiosis with hops(also willow). There is...

    Pictures of hop plants

so its said that the type of nitrogen(and also quantity) will allow aphids and other insects to grow large infestations, due to the unassimilated nitrogen in the plant's sap. I am trialling the theory now for my own curiosity, and have seen plants far less susceptible grown in only year old...

Yakima valley is desert..no excuse! the lack of rain has some serious advantages like fungal control, as long as you have enough water to irrigate with

    Hops try again

looks ok but I would not pant under pines...thirsty greedy things that turn soil acid

    hops deficiency

ok so annoyingly looks like verticillium wilt is in the mix here. on cutting the bines back for winter i could clearly see browning in the sap carrying tissues, but only down close to the rhizome. I remember noticing some tomatoes that were mixed with the hops there wilting during late summer...

    Sulfur spray timing?

I'd give wettable sulphur a go. It certainly cleared up the mites and no visible damage 2 weeks after spry now. new shoots look good. I'm growing them in pots indoors it gets quite hot in the window too with the low sun angle here at the moment

    Sulfur spray timing?

Id say sulphur and oil is no go. especially that hop leaf is very thin, delicate will not take much abuse. look at what just warm wind can do to it. I spayed wettable sulphur the other day to get rid of mites. plants were ok, but i thought i saw a thirstly look about them, as if the sulphur was...

    hops deficiency

The short answer is no, though I am now fairly confident its not a virus unless my whole garden suddenly has one:) It seems to me that there are 2 main things happening. the yellow spots between veins is one, the browning leaf edges and dissolving leaves is another. The yellow spots could well...

    hops deficiency

Also, this year there was a glut of "Vienna Gold" hops in the plant nurseries this spring. I was like"why are they selling so many of these but no other hops types?" well I hope some production nursery wasn't trying to get rid of diseased stock.... the one I bought did well but has leaves with...

    hops deficiency

    hops deficiency

Ok that's great info. I think I have another important clue. there is one bine growing into an elderberry tree, Sambuccus nigra, and I noticed that the elderberry had IDENTICAL symptoms on the leaves. The spring here was record wet. the elderberry also has quite severe Cercospora spots but it...

this stock pic of tomato with fungal infection is the closest i can find

    hops deficiency

The potassium used was potassium hydroxide, as by product from biodiesel production in glycerol. I routinely use it in composting horse manure, and have not seen any issues in the past years. I'm becoming sceptical about that theory too. the symptoms are evident on multiple plants in multiple...

    hops deficiency

thanks for that. I do water the leaves to keep the mites under control. we don't have downy mildew here in Aus, and I have never seen any powdery mildew either. It could be another fungus, like septoria but this just doesn't have the look of fungus to me. we also have very low air humidity...

    hops deficiency

here are the cones, you can see some browned off leaves in the pic. no doubt plenty of potassium. I have no idea of what the variety is...

    hops deficiency

Hi guys does anyone recognise this leaf deficiency? my theories are I may have added too much potassium, causing calcium deficiency, or possibly that the soil is too salty, as its the household compost pile, too much sodium. Its well watered so not that. I have applied trace elements a few...

    Growing hops from seed

Great detailed thread about growing and breeding hops! I have been growing some in pots recently, just to get them started but I noticed that some have a lot of leaves and long bines, look healthy but the root system was still very small. I suspect I got too keen and used too much cow manure in...
