    Hop Suppliers

I try to buy most at the LHBS, I can spare the few percentage points of cost and usually after delivery the prices aren’t that far off. Anything he doesn’t stock that I need is then generally based on delivered cost and minimized separate orders…if I can buy most of my specialty ingredients...

Hello, lurker with a first post - Just bottled my first brew

Same! I dont know why but I really hated the autosiphon (I suspect some level of user error, but dont feel bad about that). I was glad to upgrade to other vessels in part because it allowed me to move to gravity feed. That said, agreed on keeping it above the gunk but know that it wont be bad...

    The 500 club

Thats a lot of beer! I started in 2022 and am starting to plan batch 10, so I clearly have a ways to go!

Things I say to my Beer (or brewery, or random objects related to brewing, or sometimes my doggos)

In my head ‘dont forget to reconnect the hose to the whirlpool return before turning the pump back on’ 5 minutes later (out loud this time) ‘Fu@k, can someone get me some towels!?’

Welcome! Seems like a good attitude, try it out and see what you think but don’t be discouraged if the first one isn’t so good

    Smoked Porter recepie advice?

I think it very much depends on the smoked malt, but I used 36% smoked beech on a smoked dunkel and for me that was perfect. Enough to smell and taste but not so much that it tasted like an ash tray (which I have experienced in a beer before and it was a DNF for me). If I was you, I’d...

    Hello from Alaska!

Hello and welcome! I lived in Eagle River as a kid and remember things were expensive even then! I can’t say the hobby has really ‘saved’ me any money, but if you’re going to spend time and money on a hobby anyway at least this one gives you drinkable beer. And if you don’t factor in the new...

    BIAB vs 3 vessel setups

That’s fair, but also sounds a bit like you had to buy more (expensive) things to make it as easy to clean as a BIAB setup might be. But this is a pretty significant difference for me as well. With my current house layout I’m essentially renting our common space for brew day. I might feel...

    BIAB vs 3 vessel setups

Yes, very important here! I brew near the kitchen so one line goes onto that circuit and the other from a separate breaker circuit

    BIAB vs 3 vessel setups

I never tried 3 vessel because I always read something like 3x vessels equals 3x cleaning {shudder}. As I know how important cleanliness is for good beer, I’d rather produce good beer with less cleaning and a smaller footprint. I have a spike custom solo BIAB setup I bought from a great dude...

What’s with all the low mileage secondhand anvil foundry units for sale??

I actually only brewed one extract beer before switching to all grain. I wasn’t happy with the results and part of the joy for me is designing a recipe with greater flexibility. Now about 2 years later, I’m still glad I did it. But I understand that extract is a time and complexity saver for...

    Need help kicking the bottles

That’s how to win! If I make her happy by spending more time with her or helping around the house, she is more open to the next time I say it’s time to brew, which means I end up brewing more!
