    Disposable O2 tank question

I've been using the aquarium pump and HEPA for a while now and frankly, I got tired of aerating for 30 minutes. Especially now that it's hot and by the time the wort is aerated, the temps higher. :) So, I bought the adapter from more beer that goes onto the disposable O2 tanks (Lowe's, Home...

    Can I still single infusion?

Brewing a lager soon with 57% Munich, 33% vienna and 10% Carahell. I've never used these malts standalone and have always had another base malt with higher DP in the mix. Will a single infusion still work with this grainbill? I got the recipe straight from the owner of a brewpub in Berlin...

    Bigger Starters take longer?

I usually make 1-2L starters depending on the beer, of course. This time, I made a 3.5L starter. After 20 hours, I see no signs of anything in this starter. I usually get krausen in 6-12 hours. Is it just slow in appearance because of how much bigger the starter is? I know yeast only...

Anyone know the PPPG for Weyerman CaraHell?

This malt is not in my Beer Smith files and I intend to use it on a Vienna Lager. I have SRM ratings, I just don't know how I should build it into my Beer Smith. Thanks

    Do you trust your refractometer?

Hydrometer or Refractometer? My "fermenting beer" corrected refract reading is 1.012 while my hydrometer reading is 1.019 on my Ordinary Bitter (only 3 days into fermentation). For the Stout, the hydro says 1.024 but the refractometer (adjusted to "fermenting beer") says 1.017... This...

If it COULD go wrong, it DID

I don't post much but we figured this was "post worthy." And a big PROST to thorongil (glad to meet you by the way :) )for his help with most of my pre-boil madness. Ok, so I got completely hammered last night and still got up at 7 this morning to brew the Black Nipple. Hangover city. This...

    I have a "smell" too

I didn't want to hijack the other brewer's thread with my own lager funk question. I have my lagers lagering since last Saturday (day 8) at 35°. I open the freezer on occasion to make sure there's no craziness goin on in there. Well, the last couple days, the freezer smells a little...

    Low attenuation and NASTY flavor

My first AG is 13 days old. It is also a lager (schwarzbier). I pitched 2 S-23 packs into 5 gallons and I'm sitting at about 65% attenuation after 13 days at 51 degrees. I measured 2 days ago as well. Well, I'm moving it up to 65 for diacetyl rest but I decided to taste the hydro sample...

First AG and first Lager at the same time

This was my first AG attempt and It went well although there were a couple "hitches" and notes were taken to try to improve the process. This is a Schwarzbier because I LOVE them. :) First, the recipe: 9lbs Pilsner Malt 1lb Munich Malt 0.75lb Carafa II 2oz Hallertau 2.4% AA at 60 0.5oz...

    Help with Palmer's RA Spreadsheet

Hey, guys, I'm doing my first AG tonight followed by an extract batch. Doing 10 gallons because I'm making 2 lagers and I don't want to waste all that time with the JC'd freezer for just one batch. Anyway, I need to add some salts to my mash water but I'm not sure if my additions are per...

I got SOME of the water report I was looking for

Ok, I was planning on brewing my first AG tomorrow but in light of not having my full water report back from my city yet, I have decided to hold off. I don't want to screw up the first batch. Here is what I have from the City so far. I'm still prodding to get the rest. Alkalinity (mg/l)...

    Artisian Bottled Water

Anyone use Artisian bottled water for AG. I'm making the jump to AG and my water dept is not helping at all. Can't seem to locate the mineral content and the annual report does not list a lot of these. So, I'm thinking of using artisian. Thoughts?

    Hello

I live in the Phoenix area. Recently began brewing. Did a couple Mr. Beer recipes (don't throw stuff at me) and have moved to partial grains and full wort boil since. I want to make better beer and learn to mash, harvest yeast, etc. Mike
