    Coffee Techniques

Sorry for the dumb question, but are you assuming the beans to be "sanitary" enough as packaged? Or should the cold pressed beer then be boiled? Or just leave it as is and trust the beer gods to do their voodoo?

    Coffee liqueur?

I'm so excited to post outside of the beginners' forum!!!! :cross: My next baby is going to be an all grain stout (no, I haven't decided on the exact recipe yet). To get both a coffee AND oak flavor, I'm thinking about soaking 1-2 oz. of oak chips in 1-2 cups coffee liqueur (something like...

    Growing hops in Los Angeles?

Woah!!!! You're in Pasadena???? I grew up in San Marino and the soil there was AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (I assume Pasadena is the same?) Oh how I miss those orange and avocado trees in the back yard! You need to find a place to grow. Isn't there a community garden somewhere in the city?

    Growing hops in Los Angeles?

Bump for some good info. My parents have an acre in coastal North County SD and I've convinced my Dad to set aside a little space for me and my babies this spring! Is there a best variety for the sandy soil of the area? Not to hijack the thread, but any info on best local supplier for...

So...I just popped open my first home brew

Ya, I know what you mean. I popped open my IPA last weekend after 2 weeks in the bottle. Decent head, but WAY too green. Delayed gratification sucks!!!!! Good luck with your baby. I'm sure she'll turn out great.

    NB Honey Kolsch boring?

I haven't brewed this beer yet, but I'm a little concerned about it. I ordered an extract kit from Northern Brewer and......lo and behold......an all extract kit arrives. "Duhhhh, what do I do with this" I stupidly ask myself. I haven't made an all extract kit yet (6# Gold malt syrup and...

    Arrogant Bastard & Ruination

Last May we ordered a keg of Ruination for my wife's grad party. That was 24 VERY fun hours!!!!

I learned a valuable lesson today.....

It's a red ale kit from Northern Brewer. How about "Red Handed Ale"? I'm really lucky. Icing it seems to have completely done the trick. I'm still pretty shocked I'd do something so stupid. Oh well. Maybe worse has been done???

I learned a valuable lesson today.....

....if you drop a spoon into your boiling wort, don't go after it with bare hands. D'OH!!! Actually, the real lesson may be: don't home brew with >2 beers in you (if you're a lightweight like me). So today I learned how NOT to brew, and how TO brew while soaking a hand in cold water...

    IKEA swing top bottles

I spotted these bottles yesterday at my local IKEA in Costa Mesa. I didn't know if they'd work, so I didn't buy 'em (d'oh!). Is the conventional wisdom still that they'll hold up to pressure? After my first batch ended up all over the pantry, I wouldn't want the second batch becoming a room...

Will I ever be able to leave the beginners' section???

Double "phew"!! And I was starting to feel guilty about not going to church for several years. Good, now I don't have to screw up my Saturday night beer session/Sunday morning surf session.

Will I ever be able to leave the beginners' section???

I have of course read "How To Brew", and I harass my much-better-half's in-law regularly. So I am beginning to pick up a rudimentary knowledge of beer (though my brain still "knows" far less than my liver!). But I think I've just figured out what is so great about this site: With the...

Will I ever be able to leave the beginners' section???

Granted, I've only been reading this site for 3 weeks, but the stream of knowledge seems unending! I really REALLY appreciate all of the help that the old guard gives, but at what point will I know enough to move on?!? It's almost depressing to think that I have a doctorate, but I know...

    Damn i make good beer!

I couldn't agree more. I live only an hour from Stone Brewery, yet it's my wife's bro-in-law who makes the best beer I've tasted (I'm sure your brew is really good, too :D). He's the evil genius that got me into this addiction. It pains me that I have another 10 days 'til I bottle my first...

    Hola, beer dudes!

Howdy from Orange County. I discovered this site a few days ago after my first brew (an IPA partial mash) blew up in the primary. Firstly, thank you EVERYONE for posting really helpful info....too much info, really. I was unable to save my beer. I like to think it has moved on to a better...
