    Brewer's Edge Mash & Boil

No issues. I spent five minutes looking into it and found that the majority doesn't find it to be a real issue. Still though, I'll hook up a hose just in case there is a slight chance of ruining a batch. :) But then that hose could be contaminated with nasty bacteria.... Damn this hobby.

    Brewer's Edge Mash & Boil

I hadn't changed my brewing process in many years and I forgot about that. I did some reading of recent tests and at the homebrew scale hot side aeration seems to be not a big deal. The beer I brewed in that photo was a simple blonde ale and it is clean with no off flavors. It turned out...

    Brewer's Edge Mash & Boil

I used my Mash and Boil for the first time today. I used it in my garage with the door shut. The outdoor temperature was 40 and in the garage it was 45. I started my strike water at 9:45. It was ready at 10:30. At 11:30 I pulled the grain basket out, turned up the temperature and sparged...

    Brewer's Edge Mash & Boil

I was wondering what you meant by cube. I have never heard of that. That isn't a bad idea for water free chilling. Early on in my brewing years ago I would stick the pot in the snow and use my copper chiller with it.

    Brewer's Edge Mash & Boil

The idea of no more propane burner, coolers, etc made me quickly want to go electric. I actually researched electric brewing about 6 months ago and only saw the huge units that required new electrical outlets. In regards to outdoor chilling, with the electronics snow and cold might not be...

    Brewer's Edge Mash & Boil

Great point about the quality of the sheet metal. I am not going to move the unit with wort in it. I'll either suck it up and use a hose in the winter (kept in the basement when not in use) or I could drain into my current kettle and carry it inside but that would be one more thing to sanitize...

    Brewer's Edge Mash & Boil

My very first brew was a small batch indoor on the stove and I have to say that wasn't a great smell. I love the smell of fresh hops but grain & wort not so much. I am seriously considering brewing in a bathroom we have on the second floor. It has two doors and I could just turn on the...

    Brewer's Edge Mash & Boil

I went ahead about bought one. Austin Homebrew has a coupon code right now and with shipping it was $277. Thanks for all the detail in this thread, it will be useful.

    Brewer's Edge Mash & Boil

I am considering purchasing the Mash & Boil. I am tired of propane and using coolers, etc. Plus my propane unit is rusting badly and will need replacing soon. I have a question about outdoor temperatures. I live in the Chicago area and I don't brew indoor because of the smell. In the...

    Flameout Hops vs Dry Hopping

I throw it in with 10 minutes left of the boil and by beer always turn out completely clear. Why would you have to rehydrate it, the boiling wort will do that for you.

Munich Helles Dead Guy Clone (Extract & AG- see note)

I brewed this on 5/1, bottled it on 6/1 and had my first two this past weekend. I use the AG receipe with R/O water built up to the style. It's an amazing beer. Definitely one of the best I've brewed. Thanks for the recipe and tips.

    Lessons in AG brewing

I was wondering about this also. I'm on my 3rd all grain (last year was all partial mash) and and I batch sparge. It takes about 30 minutes between the two (10 for the first runnings, 20 for the second).

Munich Helles Dead Guy Clone (Extract & AG- see note)

Thanks. I've used that spreadsheet for my past two brews and it's worked great. I'll shoot for malty since that seems to be the style preferred for this recipe.

Munich Helles Dead Guy Clone (Extract & AG- see note)

I just picked up the all-grain ingredients for this (with Safale). The total was $28 out the door which I didn't think was bad. I have to use RO water so I build my water. Is there a specific water profile you recommend? Thanks!

Why can't you just tip the cooler a bit to drain it all out?

I am new to AG (but not brewing) and I just picked up a Coleman Xtreme last week. I did my first AG this past weekend and hit 72% with it. The recessed channel that flows into the sprigot has to help.

    Are these water numbers ok?

If I take the baking soda and salt out it does balance nicely. Calcium: 68 Magnesium: 10 Sodium: 0 (from 38) Chloride: 85 (from 125) Sulfate: 90 Alkalinity: 0 (from 26) Residual Alkalinity -54 (1-6 SRM) Sulfate Ratio .97 Balanced Thanks!

    Are these water numbers ok?

I used this calculator: http://www.ezwatercalculator.com/EZ-water-calculator.htm They are used to add Na and other minerals. Would you use something different?

    Are these water numbers ok?

I am doing my first AG this weekend. I have horribly hard water and a water softener so all of my water comes from an RO system. I am brewing the AHS Belgian White and came up with the numbers below. Do they look fine for a Belgian White? 3 gallons mash water, 5 gallons sparge water (per...

    TAP-A-DRAFT: first impression...

I'm still happy with it. I've been brewing for almost a year now and I am very tired of bottling so today I am ordering 4 more bottles. The way I have used them is to only use 1 CO2 cartridge at a time. If you use two it over carbs and you get too much head. Besides that I've had no issues.

    fermenting hot

Well, it remained at 70 after 12 hours. It's history: 18th, 10:30PM Brewed/yeast added at 70 degrees. 19th, 10:30Pm I see it at 79. By 11 it's in the garage with outside temps in the 60s. A cold and wet towel is added. 20th, 7:30 am 70 degrees. Moved back to basement 20th, 8pm 70...
