PLEASE let the Northern Brewer buy-out be a hoax!

Is no one even bothering to look at Northern Brewer's site? It's pretty clearly that they are family-owned. So unless their family just happens to be AB/InBev, this is totally incorrect. "Today, our founder Chris Farley remains the president and CEO – homebrewing itself has grown a lot...

    Green/Fresh hops... too green?

Holy crap, Now I feel like a newb. I've been here years and never once have I noticed the hops growing section! Thanks for the info, sad to say what I feared most is likely true: they're just compost at this point :/ I got them from him well after they should have been used. Thanks all the same!

    Green/Fresh hops... too green?

Hey Folks, my buddy picked two gallon-sized Ziploc bags worth of Cascade hops from his friends house not too long ago, in the hope that I could use them for some brews for him, especially in dry-(wet-?)hopping. He tossed the bags in the fridge for a couple days until he would see me again, but...

    Swiss & French ingredients?

Hey Fellow Brewers! My buddy and I are looking to brew a commemorative batch of beer for the re-launching of the LHC. I was thinking of using exclusively/primarily Swiss and French ingredients, but have never searched for those specifically before. Any recommendations on a particular beer style...

    Coconut Sanitation: Seeking Advice

The vodka trick definitely works. Also, take note that the oven-hot coconut will rapidly cool in the beer, and the beer will barely increase in temp; any localized killing of yeast cells will be insignificant to the whole beer. Additionally, if you don't want to pop in any extra booze, you...

    Ginger Pale Ale ALMOST Done!

That does sound good. Did you do anything to sterilize the ginger root, or just throw it in the carboy fresh? The only spoiled batch I've ever had was from a carboy adjunct that we forgot to sterilize in our excited anticipation.

    Michigan Malt co 2-row

inthesound, any further word on this malt? I had been thinking of picking up a sack at the AA store as well for the same reasons you started using it. I've been having a little conflict over the price increase, and if the efficiency really drops then I may just stick with Briess. Did you ever...

    WLP090-San Diego Super Yeast Performance

Well, to be fair, that OG was assuming 80% efficiency where we usually get 85+. I suppose it may end up closer to 75%, but even then, the OG will be huge. I've got enough hop additions to get it to 130 IBU so it will easily age for a year without losing too much bitterness. Obviously, a balanced...

    WLP090 San Diego Super Yeast

Yeah, I was already thinking yeast cake harvesting for this fella. I'm not sure how to go about wort additions just yet, and this recipe originally had no simple sugars in it. It IS unnecessarily high, but there's a (stupid) reason for it: I'm trying a Fibonacci IPA recipe from a while back. Had...

    WLP090 San Diego Super Yeast

Sorry for the re-post on this, I figured this thread was more appropriate for the question: Does anyone have any idea how high of an OG this yeast is capable of? I put together a recipe for an IIPA and frankly, the results are terrifying. I planned on making a decent starter, but am definitely...

    WLP090-San Diego Super Yeast Performance

Does anyone have any idea how high of an OG this yeast is capable of? I put together a recipe for an IIPA and frankly, the results are terrifying. I planned on making a decent starter, but am definitely going to have to get an O2 tank and now it seems like I may also have to coax the yeast by...

    Accidentally sterilized beer before carbonation....?

Good to hear it's going well! Glad my advice worked out for you. Looking forward to seeing how it tastes in the end. And don't wait too long, disposable water bottles aren't meant to hold a lot of pressure and may release it slowly, giving you flat (though probably still delicious) beer.

    StarSan... In the boil.

A little update for the StarSan-in-the-Boil Blonde: it turned out FANTASTIC. Threre is a hint of StarSan-ny goodness in it, but it isn't at all unpleasant. In fact, any friend who's had it and doesn't homebrew (ie, doesn't know what starsan is nor what it smells like) has absolutely loved it and...

    Complete beginner seeking a mentor

Once you're done reading the Complete Joy of Homebrewing (or at least done with the basics and beginner's section), check out the recipes here again. Don't be afraid to ask questions about them, and it's nice to get immediate feedback from forum users as well as from the original recipe creator...

Full Boil Question - Pot Size

Looking good so far! I'm digging the experiment. Be sure to keep us updated on how the flavors develop, too. One question tho: given that it was a 140 min boil, did you know it would take that long? Were you able to modify hop addition times appropriately? From the photo, the second batch looks...

When to hit the panic button...

Not looking for a fight here, but a few things jump out at me. I didn't say that pitching into 84 was the best way to go about it, I just said to not hit the panic button over that specific fact. 84F isn't enough to kill the yeast, not by a long shot. Additionally, if we're all here to make...

    Carboy Won't Clean

Actually, base washing glass is extremely effective. Either base or acid, but either way, make sure its at least 3 pH away from neutral to utilize it.

    Carboy Won't Clean

Yeah, no kidding. I would shy away from NaOH or KOH if you could, since most people aren't prepared to handle those kinds of caustic chemicals (and/or treat any resulting burns).

    Carboy Won't Clean

Is that glass or a better bottle carboy? Use a carboy brush on it for a while. I'd try the bleach too, but just be sure to rinse the heck out of it afterward.

When to hit the panic button...

Lol, sounds like someone needs a brew and a nap! RDWHAHB, for real!
