    Brewing Extract in Plastic Bin

Well, all looks good. I did a lunchtime reading 2 days ago, a morning reading yesterday and another reading this morning. All show a steady 1006, my target FG. I really should've expected a quicker fermentation. It's summer here and very warm. I took a sip out of my sample flask and was...

    Worried about glass bottles

Good point. I only do it because it was recommended to me as a precautionary measure. My last brew ended up very well carbonated. The bottles were hard as rocks when they were ready, despite using only 2/3 the recommended amount of priming sugar.

    Worried about glass bottles

Ahhh..... I think I see it now. The CO2 saturates into the beer and the air above it. Obviously air and beer, being gas and liquid, are not occupying all the space inside the bottle. There are spaces between the molecules that the CO2 can find a home in. As the amount of CO2 increases, the...

    Worried about glass bottles

I have a batch which I'm about to bottle. I've used 1.25L plastic soda bottles in the past. I fill them to about 80% full with the recommended amount of sugar for a 750mL bottle in each. I squeeze the bottle so that the liquid almost reaches the top then put the cap on tight. This minimizes the...

Fruit Juice vs. fresh fruit in Beer

I'm considering adding a fruity touch to my next brew. I simply came to the conclusion that I should simmer (or 'nearly boil') my 'juice' in a saucepan for a while to kill off any nasties. I'm not sure how applying heat to the juice will affect the amount of fermentable sugars it will add to...

    Brewing Extract in Plastic Bin

Well, I'd say it's working. I opened the lid to test the SG of a sample and got a good wiff of that beautiful "nearly beer" odour. I took a sample in my testing flask, which gave a reading of 1006 (which is what the can's instructions said it should be when it's finished). I'm leaving it...

    Brewing Extract in Plastic Bin

I was more worried that so much air left in the container may prevent fermentation from even beginning. It's been in for 24hrs now and although I'm not getting any visible bubbling through the airlock, there is a hint of a smell developing. Hopefully it's on its way. It'll be put into...

    Brewing Extract in Plastic Bin

I've just put a new brew on in a plastic bin I decided to use as a fermenter (it's brand new #5 plastic, thoroughly cleaned). The lawn-care guys my landlord uses slashed a hole in my original fermenter with what I imagine was an edge trimmer while I had it sitting empty in my back yard. I'm...
