I'm Ready to Build a Stand

After over two years with no work on this (and a March pump sitting in my garage), I am now able to work on stuff that interests me. Making beer is first on the list (of course). I was traveling at least half of each month from the time I built the stand until now. Anyway, I brewed two...

Spotted Cow Extract Clone Help / Challenge...Will Donate $25 to HomeBrewTalk

I'm planning on re-visiting this beer but I'm going to modify the Speckled Heifer recipe a bit to make up for some innefficiencies in my system. Besides these changes I'll follow the instructions from NB. Fermentables: 9lbs 2 row .5 lbs Carapils .25 lbs Flaked Barley .25 lbs...

    Brew Stand Fails!

I had visions of a potential fail today while brewing an extract batch. I was shaking down my stand and saw steam rolling out of the tubes with the open ends. This made me think about the vapor trapped in the welded tubes. I stopped the batch, let it cool a bit and got out the drill. When I...

    Made a BIAB bag! 2.0

For a smaller application like yours why can't you use a 5 gallon paint strainer? I have used them for grain in partial mash batches and as hop bags. Just curious, not critiquing. Kelly

    Brew Stand Fails!

The top of the MLT is 82.5" and the shelf is that tall so that it didn't hang over the keggles with no clearance to stir or work comfortably and in case I want to switch to direct fire in the future. It's 61.75" from the ground. It was supposed to be 60" but the casters ended up being a bit...

    Brew Stand Fails!

I just got the burners on mine welded in, I'm sure I'll have some stories but I haven't done a batch on this yet. It still beats lifting kegs full of hot liquid or setting burners on shelving units. I still need a pump to move the water up to the MLT but I'll test it out using pitchers until I...

I'm Ready to Build a Stand

The burners have never given me a really good blue flame even with nothing on top. They aren't as sooty as some burners but they do leave a bit of crud on the bottom. I'm going to upgrade eventually to either banjos or jets, that's the nice thing about the heavy duty frame. I can grind...

I'm Ready to Build a Stand

I have finally made progress. Between my son's football season, my college classes, my wife's college classes and my 2 yr old twin girls I haven't had time for anything. I went to Harbor Freight and got the cheap flux core welder to finish this up at my convenience. It only took a few minutes...

I'm Ready to Build a Stand

We got the stand welded together and most of the welds smoothed out. The casters are uneven and I have to sort that out. His shop floor must have had a huge dip in it right where we were working. I still have to figure out the mounting for the burners and get it painted. I wont be getting any...

I'm Ready to Build a Stand

We got the steel cut, mocked up and partially welded together today. I changed my mind on the height of the second tier and it's going to give me more room for working in the keggles. Thanks for the suggestion. I still need casters and a way to mount the burners. I'm pretty pleased with...

I'm Ready to Build a Stand

"Garden hose" should have been outside spigot. I plan on using a potable water hose just in case. FYI, I service aircraft and we fill our potable water trucks out of a sanitized (and inspected monthly) green garden hose. Welding starts tomorrow after my son's 9AM football game.

I'm Ready to Build a Stand

I just spoke with the welder, told him we'll raise the center up and brace it from the center mast to the edge of the top tier. Then we'll tack sheet metal to it as a heat shield and to allow any condensation a path down (other than in the kettle)

I'm Ready to Build a Stand

I need the stand to be compact and short, this is why its set up the way it is. I may make the center mast a bit taller, but not much. I'm going to reuse the burners from two turkey fryers for now but may upgrade later. I want to add the filter so I can use my garden hose as a source.

I'm Ready to Build a Stand

I have a friend that welds and has left over steel. I told him about my idea and he's itching to build. I'll have to buy more steel to complete it but here's my drawing. I don't have a pump but may get one soon if the expenses on this are low enough. I need something compact but cant use a 3...

Whew! I saved a stuck sparge

I've never had a stuck sparge with the bazooka screen but my efficiency is WAY low. I tried the manifold with a 10 ft roll of copper tubing in hopes of improving the efficiency. Either this was a fluke because of the flaked corn and barley (even though I added rice hulls first), or my slots...

Whew! I saved a stuck sparge

I don't post much, but figured this was worth sharing. Yesterday I tried a new Cream Ale (Spotted Cow) clone. Everything went well up to the mash... not that much can go wrong. When the hour was up, my sparge water was heated, I was ready to go and I cracked the valved open. Nothing but a...

    ghetto brew setups?...

Went from this: To this: I'm looking into a harbor freight welder and some 1 1/4" angle iron for either a gravity stand or a single tier with pumps. I dont want pumps because I'm not into "fancy" stuff. I just want to make good beer and be able to drink good beer while doing it.

    Bass Pro Burner Sale

I have that same burner and it works great. I've only used it for a full boil on extract though. It will maintain whatever temp I need it to stay at with little adjustment.

2 batch day with a first time brewer!

I did the same thing today. A guy at work has helped me with two other batches and today I bought his ingredients and turned him loose. He did really well. Not many questions and it went really smooth except for the mess his boil over made on my garage floor. He did a cream ale and I did a...
