    Burned my last beer--why?

I don't use hop bags and use a stainless mesh basket for mashing. I've done many back to back batches and even with a thin layer of whatever is on the element, I've never had scotching ever. Maybe my stainless ripple makes the difference, I don't know, I'm just saying if there's liquid in the...

Is it supposed to be this dark?

#3 and my post were posted seconds apart. So close actually, that when I hit submit, I didn't even have the notification that the post had new replies while I was typing mine out. So my apologies for duplicating a statement that I didn't know existed when I hit submit. I too also don't really...

Is it supposed to be this dark?

I haven't looked for any supporting papers, but my statement was more towards the idea that a recipe brewed with LME vs an equivalent beer brewed with grains, the LME beer will typically (I guess I can't say always here as that would be anecdotal) be darker than the all grain beer. I totally...

Another keg that won't seal $#@&%!!!

Have you used some star san to try and identify where the leak is coming from? It could be either post, the lid or even the PRV valve. Make sure you don't have some hop debris on the oring of your PRV valve, I've seen that happen before and it's maddening.

Is it supposed to be this dark?

I was editing my post when you posted this. I misread.

Is it supposed to be this dark?

It may lighten up slightly once it's cold crashed and you see the color in a glass vs fermenter, but likely not much. Welcome to the world of extract brewing (especially liquid extract) where beers will always be darker than expected due to the process of creating the liquid extract. If you...

    Burned my last beer--why?

I have to ask at what point of the brew process was stuff able to collect between the element folds? I've brewed probably 60+ batches on mine so far and I just can see a part of the brew process where stuff could collect and sit between the element folds AND the element be on constantly and hot...

    Burned my last beer--why?

So I have the same spike kettle and was never able to see the markings through the bag, and now that I have the stainless mesh basket I can't see them at all. You're able to see the markings through your bag?

    Burned my last beer--why?

I think @cvbrewer hit the nail on the head. I know you said you recirculate above and below the mash, but I'd bet you ran low on water volume in the bottom and the element was exposed. Not only does the element get exposed, so does the temp probe in those spike kettles so you will get an...

    Tilt 4 Windows

So I recently found this app because I upgraded phones and the Tilt app wasn't supported for my new phone. Upon downloading this, I cannot for the life of me get my computer (Microsoft Surface Pro 4 running Windows 10) to find my Tilt. I've looked over your website and can't seem to find...

    Spike Solo Owner's Thread

Yes I do it with my pickup tube all the time when transferring my wort to fermenter. I have it down during mash/boil, then I rotate it pointing up halfway through chilling, and then after my wort has cooled and settled, I'll pump out the wort with it pointing up and will slowly rotate it back...

    Spike Solo Owner's Thread

That's super slick. I think I really like that. How's it work for you so far?

Spike Solo basket (for 20 gallon kettle) work in a Blichmann 20 gallon kettle with a 240V brew coil?

If you brew and "Big" beers like imperial stouts or imperial IPAs where you're pushing 8% and higher ABV your mash volumes can get into the 12-13g range, so just a heads on there. As far as the top fitting flush, for the mash I really haven't noticed any major issues with mine not fitting flush...

Spike Solo basket (for 20 gallon kettle) work in a Blichmann 20 gallon kettle with a 240V brew coil?

The pulleys are cheap, maybe $40, and all you need is a $5 eye bolt from whatever hardware store is near you to set it up. I highly recommend it, though unless you're brewing a 10g batch, you can likely easily lift either basket out of the wort by hand, might just need a stepstool depending...

Spike Solo basket (for 20 gallon kettle) work in a Blichmann 20 gallon kettle with a 240V brew coil?

I have some pictures attached to a few of my posts in this thread. I believe it'll show you everything you're asking about. I also talk about why I opted to not use the Spike basket and order the mesh basket. If you have any other questions feel free to ask. I know spike equipment is a big...

    Interesting pump flow discovery/idea

I think my system does what you're trying to do. I'm at the store filling up some Reverse Osmosis water for the brew I'm about to do. When I get home and start the brew I'll link some pictures.

    Gelatine added to Keg

So far great advice in this thread but just want to mention that I haven't seen yet. Is after 24 to 48 hours of the gelatin doing its thing. All of the material it pulled out of solution will now be in the bottom of a keg. So your first two maybe three pints can be super cloudy and really gross...
