Idea for experiment: two different types of wort

So the beer is actually coming along nicely. It's been fermenting pretty steadily for the past 3 days and only started to slow down a little today. I took a gravity reading and i'm at 1.020 now and i'm hoping to get near to 1.010. Of course I couldn't resist tasting my sample and was pretty...

i would like to put forth a motion that from this day on, no brew cave should be complete without a stripper pole...

Idea for experiment: two different types of wort

Well i went ahead and did it today. Brewed with 4 different kinds of hops, 2 different DME and I used the same grains for both. There's really no rhyme or reason to what i chose or how i went about coming up with my hop schedule other than the fact that i simply wanted to mess around and have...

    Tank depot Inductor tanks?

Thanks for the info, Tank. It wasn't meant as a criticism, only an observation. The other question(s) I had were: -What's the difference between a side mount tank and a normal one? -What's the difference between one listed as full drain and one that isn't? From the drawings, it looks like...

    Tank depot Inductor tanks?

I'm almost thinking that with not too much effort, you can take a "keg bucket" (one of those plastic buckets you fill with ice and put a keg in) and cut a hole in the bottom, put the end part of the conical through it and then seal it with silicone. Then fill the bucket with water and use an...

    Tank depot Inductor tanks?

cool-i'll look into it. If i can figure out a practical way of regulating the temp then i'll probably go for it

Idea for experiment: two different types of wort

Yeah..if anything it'll just be a fun little experiment to try i suppose. I've got my original brew pot that came with the kit and the turkey fryer that i use presently so it wouldn't be all that hard to setup.

    hops variety recommendations?

Thanks for the suggestions-ended up going with centenial, cascade, and Tettnang. There's someone local to me selling hallertau potted plants as well so I'm going to pickup one of those as well. My buddy got mt. hood instead of the hallertau. Should be a nice variety between the two of us.

Idea for experiment: two different types of wort

I was just thinking from a hops point of view that I would get a different flavor if I boiled strain X in one wort and strain Y in the other and then combined vs. boiling both in the same...

Idea for experiment: two different types of wort

So I've got this idea that I'm thinking of trying. Maybe it's been done before but I haven't been able to find anything-I'm thinking of making two different types of wort (probably 2 2.5 gallon recipes) and then combining them for fermentation. I haven't gone as far as to even consider what...

Adding a penny during boil to stop hops boiling over?

+1 on the fan. I'm a big proponent after my last brew session when I started using one. It's gotta be one of the easiest and most effective things you can do. Like someone else mentioned, you can literally walk away and come back later without worry of boilover (obviously i don't do this but...

    Tank depot Inductor tanks?

I happened to click on an add i saw for tank depot at the top of the page last night and took a look at the plastic conicals they are offering. You could get a 15 gallon tank for 57.99 (+5% off discount their hbt) (stand is another 65 but i'd probably build something). Seems like a pretty good...

    hops variety recommendations?

Yeah Cascade is defintely on my list. Unfortunately I've only just gotten into brewing so I've only made 4 beers to date but I think I'll just do a little more exploring into recipes that I'd like to make. Thanks

    hops variety recommendations?

I've got a decent sized garden that is no longer in use so i figured I'd plant a couple of rhizomes. (probably have space for up to 5 but looking for maybe 3?) I'm trying to get a good variety and was just curious if anyone had any recomendations? I'll probably be brewing primarly of IPA's...

Hows this for a Brew Kettle?

+1 on a fan for foam control. It's a completely hands off solution for me-I crank the burner up until i get a roaring boil and then position my fan and never have to worry about turning down the burner. As far as aluminum-I'd recommend reading up on it yourself if you're interested but long...

    American IPA All Amarillo IPA

I had used Munton's which turned out great. Of the two you got, it looks like you might be better off with the nottingham. Looks like it's more suited towards ales than the Windsor. In regards to DME or LME, as long as you did the calculations I think you should be fine

    American IPA All Amarillo IPA

I ended up dry hopping with glacier hops-it's a very floral hop apparently. To my understanding, dry hopping is more for aroma than anything. Either way it came out damn good-i don't think you can go wrong

my personal victory (and new solution) to boilovers

well as far as step 1 i unfortunately did not get to that until after the boil. Didn't have one cold handy... I'll try harder next time-i promise!

my personal victory (and new solution) to boilovers

nice-coastarine. It was your thread i probably saw but at that point, I was just frantically searching for a solution because i was so pissed about the thought of having to go through what i went through last time. Many thanks! The one thing i wonder is if this increases the rate of...

my personal victory (and new solution) to boilovers

So i brewed my 4th beer today (a #9 clone) and had forgotten to buy fermcaps the last time i ordered stuff. I just started doing full boils my batch with a turkey fryer. I was not expected the boilover i had last time and pretty much had to sit there the entire hour with my hand on the...
