East Coast-West Coast Brew Off WTF?!?!?!

Personally, I'm done with all contests. I entered a local contest that in the past had been a BJCP/AHA contest. Not so this year. I could have wiped my ass with the scoresheets and gotten better feedback. 2 of 3 judges assigned scores with a minimum of comments (1 wrote one sentence on the...

East Coast-West Coast Brew Off WTF?!?!?!

I entered it too, and was pissed when I got the cancellation notice. I only just now saw this thread, and think that this bum got himself a totally sweet Thanksgiving party. 3 beers per entry (I was entry #74) means that he had 222 beers to share with friends. Bum.

How many turkey sandwiches have you eaten?

None here. We normally have friends over for Thanksgiving, but that fell through this year. When it turned out it was just going to be me and SWMBO, we made reservations for our favorite restaurant in the area that was having a four course meal for $26.95. I had a perfectly cooked maple duck...

I'm done with brewing. All my beers taste like ****

If your water tastes like ****, then your beer will taste like ****. I also wouldn't use rainwater, even in an unpolluted area. Adding minerals to RO water isn't that hard. If I were you, I'd head down to the local stores that offer RO water (as indicated in other's posts), and try to brew...

    Why brewing kits?

I love to cook, and I semi-enjoy baking. Sometimes I start out with raw ingredients and go to town, other times - it's been a long day/week and just want something done quick. I do all grain/extract and the occasional kit. Sometimes it's been a long day/week and just want a consistent product...

Does anyone own a Minibrew 6.5?

This is why I said that cleaning can be an issue. Nasties can hide in the threads... I soak mine after every brew day, and every third brew day break the whole thing down and throw everything in the dishwasher. Tri-clamps would be better for this...

    Accidentally dry hopped wrong beer

Make sure you take detailed notes, including your error. My best beer is one that was designed as a one off "fluke" to over-IBU a buddy. It turned out to be one of my best, but I took detailed notes, and can replicate it. I can't keep it in the keg.

Does anyone own a Minibrew 6.5?

I have one, and absolutely love it! Cleaning can be an issue, but I can fit mine in the dishwasher - so it stays spotless... I'm thinking about buying another one. Although you can find them cheaper... Buy.com has them for $179 before shipping...

    New Lesson Learned...

I've been brewing a little over two years, and kegging for all but two batches of that. Yesterday, I went to disconnect the blown cider keg (and the other kegs) and clean the lines with BLC. I've never de-pressurized my kegs before pulling off the liquid post. I will be in the future. I...

Does the Air Force Have More than One Plane - Come on!

I know it's not much consolation, but the military is pretty much outta schlitz right about now. Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, plus sustainment of all the other crap (bases in England, Italy, Germany, etc...). Add in looming (and current) budget cuts. I don't know EXACTLY how the Air Force runs...

    Brewmasters Warehouse-Slow?

I'll echo everyone else's comments about Ed and BMW. They are my go-to for supplies. Even if it's a drop ship item from another company, I'll order from BMW because their customer service is that good. I can order on Tuesday/Wednesday and have it in time to brew on Saturday. I even forgot to...

What's the next piece of equipment that you wanna buy?

Well seeing as how I'm patiently awaiting the delivery of my Blichmann 10 Gal Boilermaker and a Chill Out plate chiller from eBay, I'd have to say the next purchase is going to be a March Pump.

    Carbonating a Keg?

Why use priming sugar? I can tell you why! I have a three tap kegerator, and 6 kegs. I enjoy having my pipeline nearly continuous - if my pipeline gets low (or I'm in the mood to drink what is coming out of the fermenter ahead of something else in my pipeline) it gets force carbed. If all...

    poppet valves

This could help. It helped me pick the correct poppet to get my "racetrack" keg working again. Now it's one of my best kegs.

    What was your first brew?

Brewer's Best Bold Series American Nut Brown. It's also only one of two batches that I bottle conditioned. The addiction is strong with this one!!

Can I reseal Hops Direct bags?

I invested in one of these: http://www.sorbentsystems.com/sinbosealer.html I also found mylar bags in various different sizes here: http://search.store.yahoo.net/safetycentral/cgi-bin/nsearch?catalog=safetycentral&query=mylar%20bags&x=0&y=0 It has enabled me to keep my hops sealed the way...

    Pepper/spicy beer recipe

Lesson learned from my own experiments with pepper beer - Once you rack onto the peppers - sample at a minimum every day. Once you get to the heat profile you want, you HAVE to rack off the peppers or remove the peppers... I didn't my first batch. The BJCP comment cards all went something...

    Is stirring enough aeration?

As previously stated, dry yeast doesn't need aeration. Liquid yest - if you can make a starter, do so. Last batch I had completely forgotten to aerate (and I just vigorously stir, since I make a starter each time). Because I had used the Mr. Malty calculator to determine my starter size - it...

Ever brew a beer - and hate it?

I was looking forward to trying my smoked chipotle IPA... Not enough smoke, WAAAYY too much chipotle. I don't really like it, but I WON'T dump it...
