    Alternative to copper intercooler

The cool water flows through the inside, and the whole thing goes into the kettle. I syphon the water from the tote, but you could put adaptors on it to use household water. It just fits inside my brew kettle, with very little extra room. Yes, I'm using it as a wort chiller. I'm sure it is...

    Alternative to copper intercooler

I'm using an air conditioner evaporator to quickly cold crash. It's quick and uses less water. If you have an old refrigerator, the evaporator in it could also work. Or, a transmission cooler. I sanitize before amercing it, and use water from a tote which is filled with solar pumped well and...

    Instant chill method

I got a better way. I must be an eletrrical genius. I take the electrical plug from my microwave, unplug it, turn the plug around. Now the electricity is flowing the other direction. My micro wave now makes the wort cold.

    Motorized Grain Mill

I suspect you will have a hard time getting the RPM within reason. The motor probably turns at 3600. I got a windshield wiper motor from a junk car. Direct drive, takes a few minutes to grind 10 pounds of grain. Solar panel charges the battery.

    Thinking about All Grain

I just started AG, now with my second batch in the fermenter. Plan on spending a lot more time on the process (at least, that has been my (limited) experience so far). I read that AG was almost the same as extract, so I jumped in. Oh, you'll need to be more careful of Ph (buy a meter, have a...

    Grain Mill

I have a lot of 12 volt stuff in my shop, so I used a windshield wiper motor to power my 2 row grinder. 12 pounds of grain in about 4 minutes.

    contamination from hops?

I bottle. I'm not worried about bugs. I can filter them out (or, since I decant off of the yeast left in a bottle, maybe I won't see them). I'll dry hop with "reckless abandon" fresh hops just off the bine in a small batch off the side of my main batch, and let you know.

Looking to purchase a mini fridge to use as a fermentation chamber with an inkbird

I just went through this process (figuring out what kind of cooling device to use). Ended up with a full size refrigerator. Freezer section can make ice for cold crashing, two 5 gallon carboys and air locks fit. Free on craigslist (man, was it nasty inside). Cleaned up nicely. If I had my...

    contamination from hops?

Should I be concerned about wild yeasty stuff in my fresh hops? I have some that I was planning to add (dry hop) to my next batch. The last time I used some fresh hops, I soaked them in alcohol (vodka) before pitching them in.

Uses less electricity as fermentation chamber - mini fridge or mini freezer?

You might be able to borrow a Kill A Watt meter from your library. Ours has one.

    pump for wort chiller?

Yes, I was planning to use it (them) on the supply side, 80 - 32 degrees.

    pump for wort chiller?

I have a 275 gallon "tote" that I will use for this (for initial cool down), then recirc iced water from a cooler. My pump(s) is from MPJA, see: 12VDC Submersible Water Pump | MPJA.COM At $6.95 I bought two of them and can put them in series, if one does not move enough water. Will report...

    Disappointed in my rhizomes

I can recommend Great Lakes Hops. Mine are doing well. I did not have any success harvesting a few bits of roots and replanting them. I did have success with replanting the bines I trimmed off the main plants, However, only the ones I used rotenone (sp?) on.

    Explosions this morning

Around 4 AM heard an explosion. Three bottles went off. Pergo floor. Just finished cleaning up. Opened the remaining bottles, wearing a facemasket and opening them in a big steel pot. One went off and caused a small cut when the top of the bottle came off while trying to open. All were...

    Side shoots a problem?

I have started several plants with cuttings. I find that dipping them in root growth hormone helps a lot. They take quite a while to establish, growing very slowly the first year. Establishing their roots I suspect.

    Solar 12 volt grain grinding

Yes, it's not enough watts to boil, but I can keep 5 gal of BIAB at 150 degrees, even though it will take 2 1/2 hours to heat to heat it up. Then again, the solar power is free. and I have the time. I have a 12 volt refrigerator from a boat that I was thinking of using it to chill the work...

    Solar 12 volt grain grinding

Have two. One is two loops of 12 volts, each 300 watts, and the other is two loops, one 12 volt 300 watts and the other 120 volts, 500 watts. One inch X 11 threads, fits most US made water heaters (or weld a 1 inch X 11 nut to your pot). Or (maybe) hang it from above into the liquid - but if...

    Solar 12 volt grain grinding

Moving to BIAB, but not excited about hand grinding, so, took a windshield wiper motor and hooked it up to my grain grinder. Battery runs motor, battery charged by solar. I have a 12 volt water heater element that will be going in the brew pot (will also be solar powered). Last batch I...

    Side shoots a problem?

I have cones about 3/4 inch on the main bine. I'll let the side shoots go crazy!

    Side shoots a problem?

I have the three Cs doing well here in west central Florida, third year. My Cascade hit the roof (about 12 feet) and now is starting to produce side shoots. Should I prune these? I have been successful starting plants from cuttings, if anyone is near Tarpon Springs, I have extras.
