Solid Ingredient Kit from Midwest Supplies

I am assuming most on here are familiar with Midwest Supplies in Minneapolis. I am wondering what a solid, middle of the road beer (no pun intended) ingredient kit would be? I would like to do an ale, I don't have the equipment to lager right now. Any advice appreciated.

    Carboy advice

Ok, a couple questions about secondary. A glass bottle vs a plastic "better bottle" pros and cons? Also, what are the pros/cons of just using a primary vs transferring to a glass carboy secondary?

How long did you extract brew before going to All Grain?

I assume most people on here do all-grain brewing. I am just curious as to how long you did extract brewing (if at all) before understanding the process enough to do all-grain. I have done two batchs, a hefe, currently in bottle stage, and a lager, still in secondary. Basically I am just reading...

    Just bottled my first beer!

It was a Hefe. I got impatient last night and popped one. (Been bottled 24 hours) I did hear the Phht when I opened it, it was still flat, but it tasted pretty good. Alot like bananas actually. Ill probably open one again tomorrow night. Like tom petty said "The waiting is the hardest part."

    "Beer Bottle Bender" noob advice.

I am a newb myself, but no one told me this, and I just plain lucked out. Everyone will tell you that you need pop tops, and not twist offs, but no one told me that North American bottles cap differently than European bottles. So without this info, I went on my bottle collecting bender, and...

Anyone ever tried wormwood in their beer?

I saw in my brew shop catalog that I can buy an oz of wormwood for around 2 bucks. I was thinking of trying it out in a beer. Lord knows absinthe is fun, why not add some thujone to beer? Just wondering what type of beer people would recommend using it in.

    Urgent help needed!

Ok, I am about 20 minutes into my first boil. I have 3 gallons in the pot. LME, 2 lbs of rice syrup, and 3/4 oz Hallertau hops. My problem is I cant seem to get a good boil going. Just a measly slow boil. If I put the lid on, it goes crazy. What should I do, stick with the lid off and the slow...

Just got my Midwest Supplies Starter kit!

I couldn't find a forum where people discuss good/poor retailers, so I just wanted to share this story here. I placed two orders with them on Monday, and without me even asking, they combined them, and refunded me the excess shipping charges. They were prompt, friendly, and honest. Ill share...

    Water or Vodka for Airlock?

I've seen a couple people here say you should use Vodka in your airlock. I was just wondering why that would be better? Does it not evaporate as quickly? Is it because it is thinner and allows air to escape easier? Just wondering what people think. Thanks!

What advice would you have for yourself back when you started out?

Ok, I am brand new at this. I think I am going to start my first batch within a week. The question I would like to ask every experienced brewer on here is this. If you could go back to that day you brewed your first batch, what advice would you give yourself, knowing what you know now...

Cleaning Commercial bottles for home use?

Ok, newb question. I have read that it's better to use pop tops, as opposed to twist offs. So, I switched my beer of choice to Sam Adams. My question is what is the best way to clean these bottles (after I've drained them :)) afterwords? I have been soaking them in very hot water for about 20-30...

    Kokanee clone?

Anyone happen to know where I could find a recipe or a kit for a Kokanee clone? It's a Canadian beer, and one of the best lagers I have had in my life. I can't find it in my region, so maybe try to clone it? I doubt anyone can help me out, but I still thought I would ask...

Blood Orange Hefe from Extreme Brewing??

Anyone tried the recipe from the book "Extreme Brewing" Blood Orange Hefeweizen? It sounds like it would be really good, but the only place I can find blood oranges right now is from the other side of the country, and its going to cost me close to 50 bucks to get a dozen of them where I live. So...
