Where can I buy fresh whole cone hops?

Canadian homebrew supplies has a good selection in vacuum pack. As for my own home-grown hops, I just boil 'em up fresh after a quick rinse to remove some of the bugs.

Good Munich Dunkel possible w/o a lager yeast?

I used Wyeast German ale yeast (1007) for the Brew House Munich Dunkel kit with good results. The real trick was to add Blackprinz malt and Herkules hops. Mmmmmm.

    Bitter with a twist

Just thought I’d share with folks a nifty little brew I put together. I started with the Festa Brew West Coast IPA. My idea was to use this starting point to make a hoppy, heavy-bodied low alcohol bitter. On Friday evening, using the supplied Safale US-56 yeast, I made a starter (4 oz...

    Ale yeast for Oktoberfest

I just pitched a mix of 1007 and 1098 into the Brewhouse kit. It's my Anglo-German Rocktoberfest.

Do you ever get tired of big beers?

I make a nice mild by mixing pale ale with de-alcoholized dunkel and carbonated water.

    Brewhouse Kits

I can't find my notebook, but I'm pretty sure it was one from the private collection: Wyeast 3739-PC Flanders Golden Ale Yeast.

    Brewhouse Kits

^No, but I've used the Belgian yeast to good effect in other kits: pale ale and Munich dark. I blend the Belgian yeast with a British ale yeast because I read that the Belgian alone can get stuck. I figure that the Pilsner/Belgian should come out pretty close to a standard saison. Same goes for...

    Brewhouse Kits

I don't think you'll be able to get the Maibock in Ontario. I used a smackpack of the lager yeast without starter. No prob. I do it all the time.

    Brewhouse Kits

Btw, I'm doing the Bock, as well as a couple of Pilsner kits, at cellar temperature. I'm using Munich lager yeast for most, but I'm also using a Belgian ale+English ale combo for the rest.

    Brewhouse Kits

Why is this thread in extract brewing? Maybe we need a new subforum for liquid wort kits.

    Brewhouse Kits

I just emailed Spagnol's. They plan to have a new website up in June. I've got two kits of the Alberta Bock on the go.

Running low (aka how do you get a pipeline?)

I found that having 3 fermenters really solves the problem. (Full disclosure: I use liquid kits). Three seems to be the magic number for making sure that I have enough for short, medium and long term. The other thing is to make sure that you make quick-maturing beer like pale ale the backbone of...

    REALLY Late Oktoberfest

I use liquid wort kits from The Brewhouse. They only sell their Oktoberfest in September. I managed to save a couple of bottles from last year, and they're now fantastic: dry, malty, delicious. This year, I ordered four kits. I'm going to save at least two for a year. Btw, I do all my...

    Hop particles in keg…

The danger here is that the hops may jam up the keg valves. This is extra serious if your kegs don't have a pressure relief valve. When this happened to me, I managed to get my beer out with only a jet of IPA in the face. I would transfer and filter while you've still got flow.

why do friends think homebrew is FREE?

I look at it this way: I am furthering a cause (good beer), and I'm enjoying my hobby. I'm glad to help turn other people on to the cause and the hobby. In terms of cost, it's a rather inexpensive hobby. Compare it to golf, for example. So, my beer is free. Now, if somebody wants me to prepare...

    Seeking info about Siechen beer

Yeah, that was my next step. Thanks. eta: info request submitted to Tucher.

    Seeking info about Siechen beer

I’m trying to find out about a Nuremberg beer called Siechen. Here is a description: The beer, when it at last arrived, was like nothing I had ever tasted, and I have been searching for its like ever since. The head was dense, halfway to whipped cream. The beer that slid its way under...

    poppet valves

Awesome tip. Thanks. I got my new universals last night, installed one, couldn't get a seal, stretched the spring, and voilà! Here's to hoping this is a good long-term solution.:mug:

Ale Yeast for Pseudo Bock Recipe

I did a BrewHouse Dunkel kit with a blend of pacman and English ale yeasts. Tastes great.

Brewhouse Kits - looking for opinions and reviews. . .

Any ideas for a BH barley wine? Maybe the Pale Ale with no water, and some extra DME?
