Motorizing the malt mill - old air compressor

So I'm re-purposing an old air compressor I found next to the dumpster. The motor works fine. The compressor head was shot and not worth fixing. Took off the head and started removing the needed parts. Filthy from leaking oil. Cut the deck off the tank. Had to take apart the mill and...

Spa water heater elements - Who is using?

About $20 - $25 each on ebay. Pros and cons? Just curious if anyone is using this type of element. I'm thinking of using two of them in a setup for testing purposes. Seems it would be easier to install these in a kettle (side mounted) and would keep out of the way of an immersion...

Opinions - Oxygenation when using soda/corney kegs for fermentation.

I have decided to start using corney kegs to ferment in. One idea that has rolled around in my head was to fill / pressurize the head space with oxygen, shake the keg, let it rest a bit, vent and then pitch the yeast. Simple, no stone to clean etc. This is assuming .5 gallon of head space...

    Stainless Camlocks review

So I upgraded my system to ss camlock disconnects. I like them ok. They are not one handed like my mcmaster.com brass ones but they do lock down ok and I think I can learn to tighten them with one hand given some time. On the valves On the pump Upgraded kettle with a...

    Soldering Stainless steel

First attempt. I did not let the flux sit very long on the fittings before soldering it with a propane torch. I used regular lead free plumbing solder. I'm quite surprised how well it worked. I think I overheated the fitting. Obviously there is way too much solder on there. You can see...

    Bochet Mead (burnt mead)

I brewed this back on 5-16-09 The process is not very fun as you have to watch it the entire time and it is perpetually in boil over mode so you have to stir it constantly. Basically I boiled 18 pounds of store bought (Sam's Club) honey down to a very thick not quite black color and added back...

    rice hulls and tannins?

Just wondering what boiling rice hulls would do to a batch of beer. I've read they have no tannins and don't contribute flavors. The reason I ask is it could help provide a filter bed for pellet hops and break material when using a braid in a boil kettle. I generally never use them so I...

    Alternative electric solution.

Just shooting an idea out there. The idea is to use TWO electric stove top elements to heat a kettle. The twist is using two of them interlaced. Basically the coil could be spread enough so that two elements could be put together, one inside the other. A custom holder would be made to keep...

    Pumpkin seeds.

Any one try brewing with roasted pumpkin seeds? They are pretty tasty. Very nutty with faint squash note. I toasted the seeds in my toaster oven after gutting the pumpkin. Tasty as is. Wondering how they would be in beer.

Brew in a Bag Brew - brew stand.

So I put together a new stand out of stuff I had laying around. Its designed for brew in the bag method of brewing but with the 2 tiers I can do a traditional mash with my mash tun. A couple more tweaks and it will be finished. About 5 or so hours of welding and wood work.
