    brew competitions

Typically tables are organized by both table size and keeping like categories together. This can be very challenging since it depends what folks are entering and how many judges you have to work with. The BJCP Competition Handbook provides guidance on how to approach this...

New Jersey Where are all the Northeast region homebrewing get togethers?

The Homebrewers Jamboree in NH would be the one large regional event in the Northeast that comes to mind (held in the Fall): http://www.homebrewersjamboree.com/ Other pouring events include festival style competitions put on by local breweries/charity events - here in CT we have Brewers...

Bottle Condition or Keg for Competition?

Congrats on your first competition! I’m guessing from your post that you don’t have a counter pressure filler, beer gun, or other method to transfer fully carbonated beer from the keg to a bottle without oxygen pickup. Without a good method, I would lean towards bottle conditioning since the...

    Canning Question

I primarily will can off the keg using a Blichmann Beer Gun for most styles. It is easier to dial in the carbonation in the keg prior to canning. I do can-condition for highly carbonated beers such as a Witbier or Hefeweizen since it is difficult to achieve an effervescent character from a keg...

Connecticut Maltose Express is NOT(?) closing. What LHB shops remain in CT?

Underground Brewers of CT have done two group buys since Maltose closed down. The last one was from Thralls in Windsor, CT. Usually posted on the FB group page.

Is 2206 known to be slow

I have not found 2206 to be a slow starter when pitched fresh and with enough cells. Did you happen to note the best before date on the Wyeast pack? Seeing it took 3 days to swell suggests either an old packet or it was already stressed prior.

Fermentation Drive for High Gravity Lager - Doppelbock

The OG was 1.087 for this batch. It was pitched directly on yeast cake from a prior batch of a Dunkel, so the yeast was good to go. :)

Fermentation Drive for High Gravity Lager - Doppelbock

I have a Doppelbock going right now, also with 833 yeast. :) I will typically start raising the temperature about 4 gravity points from FG and start spunding at the same time. However, if the gravity trace from the Tilt starts to plateau I'll consider bumping the temperature earlier. I...

    Can Seamers

I've been using the Oktober SL1 for about a year now - the unit is absolutely solid and I have had zero issues. No adjustments or dial-in time required: first can was spot on and every one since has sealed without any problems.

    Mash temperature control Grainfather S40

Just unboxed my S40 and ran a quick temperature test using 5 gallons of water (approximately full volume for a 3 gallon batch). Target mash temperature ran 2-3 degrees F higher than the temperature set on the S40 based on two digital thermometers. Brought the unit up to boil, and sure enough I...

    Canner or glycol chiller

Some suggestions for can filling: Cap on foam I found I would lose some volume in the transfer to the canner, even using a gentle squeeze. I now keep one finger on the cap pressing down, then tilt the can so I can get my second hand under it. That way, I can transfer from the fulling station to...

    Canner or glycol chiller

It would be helpful to know a bit about your current process/brewing equipment to assess. If, for instance, a glycol chiller would allow you to introduce temperature control for the first time it would be my preference. In my case, I already had temperature control via old refrigerators with...

Trying to make a Pecan Flavored ale

If you want to use real pecans instead of flavoring, I'd suggest a multi-step roasting process to pull as many oils out of the nuts as possible. This is the method (don't recall the original source) I've used on a pecan brown ale: Pecans toasted 300F for 10 mins Paper bag overnight to collect...

    Anyone Canning Beer?

I’ve been using the Oktober SL1 for a couple of months now using either the Blichmann Beer Gun for filling off the keg or can-conditioning. No detectable oxygen issues so far, even for a NEIPA canning. A good video to watch is (Bryan Rabe) in which he shows his entire canning process. In...
