    It directs me to add the hops with the extract after the grains have steeped. It does not say to split them. So, it appears they are for bittering only. Since this is my first brew, it is unusual to me, and differs from what I have read online.

    Thanks for the advice. I think I will pick up a 3 gallon carboy for the secondary. So, 1/2 the extract and 1/4 the hops and steeping grains. Is that the generally agreed upon conversion?
