    Decoction

My approach is two separate mashes, a thick D mash and and a thinner I mash, to avoid the mess of having to pull a decoction. I have a spreadsheet with the math laid out somewhere. From memory, it was half the malt in each mash, with the D mash stepped up through saccharification rest then...

    Brewing book ideas?

Ron Pattinson is worth checking out. There are a lot of out of print, old titles on the internet archive and Google Books.

Help with calculations for counterflow chiller

LMTD (log mean temperature difference) is used to calculate counterflow exchangers. LMTD = (greater temperature difference - lesser temperature difference) / ln(GTD/LTD) Q = U *A * LMTD Q = heat transfer rate U = overall heat transfer coefficient (300 is a good starting assumption) A = heat...

Pico doesn't inject steam into the step filter. The steam from the thermoblock is connected to one run end of a tee, with the keg pump outlet on the other run end of the tee, each with check valves. The branch of the tee goes to the rotary valve, which goes to the M, P, 1, 2, 3, and 4 ports in...

    Picobrew Water Reservoir

It feeds the thermo block (steam generator), and ends up condensed in the wort.

Picobrew Pro - Manual Brewing - Modifications

If designing a custom bag for the Pico, in the shape of a rectangle (or hexagon, if you want to hug the cut off corners of the step filter), it would be better to make the sides of a much tighter weave than the bottom.

For an objective of 'in as little time as possible', the answer is infinite length.

Broken PicoBrew Z - Need help with finding parts or part numbers

The broken part sure looks like the big brother of the inline filter used on the Pico S/Pro, with the screen pulled out. I'd look for a match by image searching. If it's the same plastic as the keg disconnects, it may be possible to weld or fuse the broken part.

Broken PicoBrew Z - Need help with finding parts or part numbers

The broken part looks like an inline filter to me, maybe being used without a screen as a wide spot in the line. You might find a suitable replacement searching with that as a target. If the plastic is the same as used for the quick disconnects, there may be info out there on welding it or...

    Purging bottles with CO2?

The counterpressure filler I assembled ~25 years ago could be used to purge. A typical pressure purge for pharma operations involving flammables was 2x or 3x 15 psig, vented to atmospheric pressure. The math is pretty simple if you assume good mixing, approximately halving the O2 with each 1...

    Rye Lager

I recall someone on a home distiller's board commenting that rye flour gave more rye character than rye malt. No guarantee this applies to beer as well as whiskey. I bought some rye and oats from a local farmer. Both came unhulled, IIRC. Thinking I'll try brewing with one or both one of...

    Small Batch Fermenter?

I used a 6 qt pressure cooker for fermenting a small batch before. They are available in larger sizes, but get kinda spendy. Sterilization is cake.
