    Question about unmalted grain

I have seen alot of proponents of cereal mashing for people wanting to convert unmalted grains. My questions is, since unmalted grains are just like malted grains (ie, starchy) without the enzymatic power why not just mash these unmalted grains as you would with other grains and let the...

    Old yeast starter

So here is the thing: I have the brewday coming up (Small batch of a low gravity ale - 1.037ish) and the yeast i'm using is relatively old (It's a Liquid WYeast Propagator dating from August '09). I still want to use this packet, because chances are i'm probably not going to get any fresher...

    Yeast cycle - Fermentation

It's not an extremely useful or practical question, but i was wondering if someone can explain to me how exactly do Yeast "know" when to stop their fermentation phase? ** Do they stop once a given level of ABV has been reached? If so, why are there some known cases of yeast unintentionally...

Drinking beer out of a clay cup.

I just went to a Renaissance fare some weeks ago and i had the pleasure to drink some generic macro-lagers (which i was already very familiar with) out of clay cups. Now, all i have to say is, the beer was very different than what i remembered it to be. The clay actually emphasized the...

    Fruit Winemaking books

I'm looking for some good books on fruit winemaking to start my venture through this wonderful side of zymurgy. I am a Semi-experienced homebrewer and i am looking for something like The joy of homebrewing or How to brew for fruit winemaking. Advices? What are the reference books? What...

Are these dimensions OK for a Mash tun?

I'm getting all the stuff to begin AG, and i have this tall 8 gallon cooler with the following dimensions: Height: 16 inches. Width: 8 Inches and Length: 15 inches. I fear the length and width might be too small and that it might lead to overly deep grainbeds... So i wanted to hear...

Does a Natural gas burner pose the same problems a Propane burner poses?

I'm sure it is a stupid question, but i know absolutely nothing about the issue. Would a prolonged indoor (by a large opened windows, for instance) boil with a natural gas burner have any negative impacts on ones health?

What exactly makes foam a certain color?

Yes, i know grain has alot to do with it but that still doesn't explain why there are Stouts (assuming they use Black patent or roasted barley) who have white head and some who have darker shades of creme/pastel/tan. At first i thought it had something to do with nitrogen since the only...

Do flameout additions add oiliness to the beer?

... À la 'Dry Hopping'? I've never done a flameout addition, but i have done some dry hopping and didnt really like the oily character it gave to the beer...

    Yeast too old?

I'm planning on brewing up an APA tomorrow using Safale S-05 dry yeast packet. The thing is on the back of the packet it reads "03/2009 SWBC" which i assume is the Best before date, so with that in mind my questions are: What possible off-flavors / problems should i expect from using a...

Just had a month old Chimay Blue...

Forgot to close this one, so it spent a full month on the fridge. Today i tasted it and it was just fowl, it was turning into a brownish color and it tasted like liquid feces. It actually had a strong semi-pleaseant smell (compared to the rest) of Cider / Apples. My question is, what...

Can you make decent tea with Hops?

Sorry if this has been discussed, unfortunately the search fuction doesn't allow for searches of words with less than 4 characters and i'm not about to search among one million threads with the word "hops". So back to the topic at hand, as anyone had luck with tea made from hops, as in...

Ok, what the hell is this?

I've just seen this product on my online brewing store, which is supposed to be a wort chiller. The caption says its more efficient (it's a bit more pricey aswell) than the traditional copper coil. So i guess my question is, has anyone had any experience with this device?

Help me out with my Porter recipe.

So... I had some ingrendients laying around from my first batch and decided to brew a (Robust) Porter. I patched up this recipe from several Porter recipes in Beersmith and BeerTools.com; I have very little experience so let me know if theres anything glaringly unsual / unbalanced. The...

Importing different Style guidelines into Beersmith.

Is this a feature? Is there a AHA style guidelines file which one can import into Beersmith or does one have to add it by hand?

    Mold in muslin bags

Sorry for the 405th Mold thread, it's just that i have not seen a thread relating to mold in fabric equipment. I just dumped the moldy musselin bags (don't ask) in a heavy water / bleach concentration. I figured that this way, i'd be killing two birds with one stone (ie, whitening of the bags)...

"Cold crashing" as a method for Wort cooling.

Just curious if something like this could possibly work? Would this cool off the wort faster than the ice bath method for instance? Or is it just a stupid idea? EDIT: Obviously this would have to be done in a freezer.
