    Aphids in harvested hops

This keeps getting weirder and weirder! So what I thought were aphids covering the outside lip of the paper bags turned out to be eggs of this species: http://www.natural-insect-control.com/product.php?id=000000267 they are called APHIDOLETES APHIDIMYZA and they eat aphids. apparently they...

    Aphids in harvested hops

Well I was actually thinking I could dry them in the paper bags. I'm not talking about a ton of hops, I would estimate 3-5oz dried. I've got them in 6 lunch size paper bags each about 1/3 full. I shake the bags a couples time a day and keep a fan on them. I dried about 3/4oz of early hops...

    Aphids in harvested hops

So I harvested my hops a few days ago. I never noticed aphids during the grow season, but after having the cones in paper bags inside my apartment for a couple days there was some sort of hatching and what seemed to be thousands of aphids came crawling out of the bags and all over my apartment...

Pellet hops shelf life once opened

I have some Magnum and Columbus pellets I was thinking about using in my next homebrew batch, but they have been opened for a couple months now. I put them in ziploc bags when I opened them, but I forgot to put them in the freezer. Am I safe using these (taste wise), or should I just toss them...

    Name this pest

I harvested some of my cascade hop cones today, and found that some had been damaged by pests. The ones that were damaged were on the top half of the plant. They appeared to be wilted, somewhat brown, and had chunks eaten out of them. The ones that had been damaged were clustered together in...

    Wet hop ale - suggestions?

I'm in the same situation that you are, so I have no first hand knowledge of this, but from what I have read its more like 4:1 or 5:1 for wet hops to dry hops. Let us know how it turns out. Also, is the IPA recipe you mention posted somewhere on this site?

    Freezing wet hops?

I have some first year cascade hops that are ready to harvest, that I want to use in a wet hop pale ale. The problem is I cant brew until next week, so my question is, is it ok to put the wet hops right off the plant into a vacuum bag and throw them in the freezer until I can brew? If i do...

    sluggish hops

I took my first stab at growing hops this year, with 4 cascades and 2 nugget plants. One of each cascade and nugget grew like crazy and reached 14+ feet pretty really in the season. The cascade has lots of nice looking hop cones on it, but the nugget has only sparse hop cones. the other four...

    Experienced growers, please help!

I have a couple questions regarding some first year cascade and nugget hop bines I am growing this year. First question is, what should I do if the two main bines that a rhizome puts out are exactly the same size? Should I cut one back or train them both on the same twine? I am using a tent...

    Steeping grain question

When steeping specialty grains or doing a partial mash, should the grains be steeped in the full 5-6 gallons that will be boiled, or should they be steeped in a smaller amount of water? I have also read in various places steeping temps of 155F all the way to 170F, what's the best temp to steep...

    Oxygenation, is a filter necessary?

I am about to get an Oxynator oxygenation kit (the ones the use the disposable red tanks) and I am debating whether it is necessary to use a sterile inline filter with it. Does anyone use one of these set ups without a filter? Have you ever had issues doing it this way? Isn't pure oxygen...

American Wheat Beer Gumballhead inspired WPA

Are the grains in this recipe for steeping, or is this a partial mash recipe? I was under the impression that 2-row and white wheat were must mash grains. Would I be missing much if I made this without the White wheat and 2 row?

    First recipe attempt... look ok?

How much hops does one of those hold? Does it decrease the efficiency of the hops by very much?

    First recipe attempt... look ok?

This is my first attempt at trying to make my own recipe on beersmith. I have done a few kits before that turned out pretty good, but I want to try something new. I am going for an a really hoppy DIPA with lots of hop flavor and aroma Amount Item Type % or IBU 3 lbs Extra Light Dry...

to boil or not to boil?

ok, so no boil. What about the Irish moss? Will it do its thing in hot water, or does it really need a hard boil? Also, does anyone have any advice on how much ginger to use? Papazian's recipe is very vague, calling for 1-6 oz. I like strong/spicy ginger beer, so I'm thinking about using 4...

to boil or not to boil?

I'm a beginner brewer, and like many other people on this forum I started out by reading The Joy of Home Brewing. I stumbled across Papazian's "Barkshack Ginger Mead" recipe and I think I am going to give it a try. This will be my first attempt at making mead, and my main question is, should I...

    contaminated; what now?

I'm having a hard time getting a good close up but here are a couple more pictures. this batch seemed like it started out great. It had a super thick krausen and smelled pretty good. I had it in primary for a little over a week, after it finished out I racked it to secondary, and the...
