Brew automation - solenoid vs. motorized ball valves

Seems this valve is rated to 90C or 194F. Anyone using it had any problems with running fresh boiled wort? I imagine the wort will only be above 194F for a short time after flame out (even more so for higher elevations).

    Carrot Beer?

I'm curious to see how yours turned out. Its been about a year since I brewed my "Franken Cider" and I'll be popping the cap on one next week to try it. We'll see how funky it is after a year of aging.

    So who's brewing this weekend?

About to mash in with an IPA 13 lb 2-row 3 lb Munich 1 lb 60L Hopped every 10 minutes starting 30 minutes into the boil with a mixture of Chinook and Cascade, increasing the percentage of Cascade and decreasing the Chinook through the 90 minute boil. Dry hopping with additional Cascade...

    PEX for a MT manifold??

I tried and it was a pain in the butt to work with. (I was trying to keep it dryfitted for ease of cleaning.) I started a thread on it here: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f51/using-pex-tubing-mash-tun-manifold-143043/ In the end I went with a 1/2" copper tubing manifold. It wasn't that more...

    Rice hulls question

Come to think of it , a stuck sparge is indicative of not setting up an porous filter bed with your grain. A dough ball is indicative of not mixing water into grain adequately enough to wet all grain evenly. They are separate issues, no? Although, I would imagine adding rice hulls would help...

    Rice hulls question

Depends how well you mix once the grain is in the mash tun. If you just give it a quick stir on grains without a husk, you likely will end up with dough balls. I usually have enough room in my grain bag to "massage" the bag to premix the rice hulls first. As soon as that grain hits hot water...

    Rice hulls question

Mix them in. The point of using rice hulls is because some grains (like wheat) are lacking a husk. Its difficult to set up a filter bed when sparging without a husk because the grain bed compacts. Rice hulls help give the grain bed "loft", allowing water to access more surface area of the...

Autumn Seasonal Beer Maple Pumpkin Ale

Its the spice that makes pumpkin pie or pumpkin beer taste like what we expect. I haven't tried it, but I imagine you'd be able to make the beer without using the squash. You might even be able to substitute butternut for pumpkin, if you're willing to prep the butternut from scratch. Either...

    Weird bottling experience

Bad bottle... I found one once when I was capping. Entire neck broken into shards of glass. Since then I only re-use bottles that I know have been handled gently. I've heard of homebrewers collecting bottles out of people's recycling, but I would think twice about doing it now.

Price comparison: All grain vs Extract

If you are interested in the hobby to believe that you want to brew great beers for the foreseeable future, go AG. There is a steep learning curve but its actually quite easy after a couple batches. Invest in a good book like "How To Brew" by John Palmer. Read it cover to cover, brew and...

How to track a guy who hit my car... suggesstions?

I agree that he might not be bad guy. But I also believe that having to take a lot of extra time to get the best deal quote for him is ridiculous. Especially when I know the place I took it does a great job and are usually a great value. If he wants me to take it to his shop, I would be happy...

How to track a guy who hit my car... suggesstions?

I'm kinda ignorant with insurance... never had to file a claim in 12 years. I figured it would be easy enough in small claims court with his note. Almost word for word, it says " I hurt your car and I'd like to fix it. Pleas call..." with his first name and phone number. I was happy that he...

How to track a guy who hit my car... suggesstions?

Wow.... thanks for all the great responses! (even the Craigslist/Reno 911/IRS posts!). I used the $0.95 peoplelookup.com website and was able to get his name and address. I had no idea you could get an private address that easily I was planning on filing a police report tomorrow. This...

How to track a guy who hit my car... suggesstions?

Thought I'd throw this out to the infinite wisdom of homebrewtalk! A guy backed into my car in the middle of the night, but was kind enough to leave a note, a first name, and a phone number. He expressed a desire to fix the damage he did. I got an estimate for fixing the body, and the guy...

New to forum, new to brewing, tuns of questions

.... use your run of the mill thermo, as long as it goes to 212 degrees or above. Digital is nice but can building up condensation when brewing and is a bit slower to read a temp than analog... ... Store you kegs cool. I've had beer in mine for over a year and as long as I maintain the CO2...
