    understanding efficiency

Hey guys- I've been all-grain brewing pretty successfully for about a year, but haven't ever really paid attention to efficiency. I would like to dial down my system and start understanding these details better. Could anyone help me? I want to know how to hit my target OG better. The...

    poppet valve

Hey guys... I just got my first corney...took it all apart to clean it and now when I put the poppit back in the OUT post and screw the OUT post down, the poppit doesn't depress...any thoughts? Thanks

Hey everyone- just to note...you all have been SO helpful on this forum!!! What does it mean when I get an OG higher than the target? My OG was 8 or so points higher than it should have been. why?? THANKS!!! :mug:

    cloudy wort?

I just did my first All-Grain English Pale Ale. My first runnings were VERY cloudy even after the vourlouft (spelling?). Is this normal, or did something go wrong in the mash? Also, my OG was 10 points higher than my target!!! I'm new at this...I hope my mash worked- I lost some temp along...

    keg storage

Question- This may sound really stupid, but how long does beer last in a keg? Is it just as long as a bottle? Thanks for humoring this novice question-

    carbonation

I just tasted my first AG Porter (OG 1072 FG 1012) and it tastes AWESOME! Except for that it is a bit sweet, and it's pretty flat. I put the normal 3/4 cup of corn sugar, but maybe I needed more since its a pretty big beer? Also, I am tasting it 3 weeks after bottling. I've been told that...

HELP! I'm totally new to kegging!

Hello! I am completely new to kegging, and want to start. I'm very overwhelmed at the amount of gear needed. I do know however that I want to have a "Draft Box" system for the time being before I get a fridge that I can convert. Can someone maybe lay out what I'm going to need equipment wise...

    Secondary fermentation

Hey all- when I do my secondary fermentation, do I need to keep it at my original fermentation temp, or can I put it in my colder cellar?

    yeast

I/m making a Porter...OG estimated at 1065. Would I be okay with just one WYEAST American 1056 liquid pack? The pack says it's rated for beers up to 1060...my recipie says to put 2.5 packs of liquid yeast...that seems way too much. The recipe also says you could also use 12 grams of...

    mash water help!

Hey all, I'm doing my first all-grain tomorrow. It's a porter. The pre-boil volume is 7 gallons. I am adding strike water at 1 quart per pound. The grain bill is 15.5 lbs. If I add 1 quart per pound for striking, then sparge with (according to Papazian) half of the grain poundage in...

    measuring water

Now, this may sound really silly, but when you are heating up strike water for your mash, and sparge how do you measure it when it goes into the mash tun? I know that water/grist has to be about 1.25 quarts a pound, but how do you make sure that level of water is going in? I'm familiar with...

    efficiency?

I am new to AG. I keep hearing things about efficiency. I still haven't really got a grasp of what it is, or how it's measured. Maybe someone would be good at explaining what efficiency is, and how we measure it. Thanks for all of the awesome advice!

    grain mills

I was wondering if there is a grain mill with adjustable plates. My wife wants a mill to make flour with for Christmas, and me being the Beer Minded Brewer that I am, thought that maybe we could get one that could adjust for crushing barley, but make it so that you can mill flour as well-...

    carboy size

I was wondering...if I am making 5 gallon batches, is it okay to just use a 5 gallon glass carboy? My dad had 2 5 gallon carboys from wine making years ago that he gave me. Should I buy a 6+ or is 5 okay? 'Till now I have done buckets. Thanks!

    Substituting partial-mash to extract

If I wanted to substitute part of an extract recipie and do a partial mash for a fraction of the extract, how would I best calculate this? Is it a pound for pound conversion? I JUST finished my first partial mash (IPA) and want to incorporate the partial mash into an extract recipie. Thanks!

    What's floating in my beer?

After a week in the primary, my first partial mash, IPA had a bunch of white globs in it. I think it's protein or something, but just curious to know what this is. I didn't really filter my beer. Only whirlpooled, then syphoned off after the boil. Just curious! Thanks

    Fermentation problems?

Hey- I just did my FIRST batch of partial mash, using 3 lbs Vienna malt mashed with 1lb crystal malt and 1/2 lb of toasted pale malt, finishing with 3lbs of dry extract. Bubbling started in the primary (I pitched dry yeast that I let "soak" for an hour in some water) but that was sunday and...
