We had a snake here, that can close its eyes, and turn them. Looked it up online and figured it out. Should have offered it a beer..... where were my manners!

Kill a snake today. Maybe 2

I saw a spider today. I let it live. You're Welcome. :mug: I'm actually looking at making up a new beer. Lately, I have been craving the unknown. I want to make a beer so good, that it would satisfy my craving for a lifetime and make me never drink again. And then I want to drink a bunch of...

    No Flowers yet?

I am in the same boat. 7 different varieties, and only my cascades have hops on them right now. I live in the mojave desert, so we get some high temps. So even if the other 6 varieties do not do well, i now know how well cascades do in hotter temps. Cascade is proving to be a promising...

    2009 Hop garden picture thread.

You all have some great progress. Mine are ranging from 2 feet to 5 feet at the highest. Of course they are first year, so I expected less growth vs a plant which has a root system already established. Soon though! :D

    Hops Dying from Top down

Needs more water. Not necessarily a drowning of water, but another moderate water in between waterings, especially if you live in a hot dry climate.

Kill a snake today. Maybe 2

I saw a snake in my girlfriend's backyard. Someone over there wanted it dead. It could be seen with about 8 inches of its head sticking straight up out of a hole. They brought me a pellet gun and told me to take care of it. I said, "I'm going to feel bad if I do this. He's not messing...

    2009 Hop garden picture thread.

In my opinion, having them in the grass like that is good vs having them in just a bare dirt surrounding. I only came to this conclusion because having vegetation keeps a region cool. Having bare soil which is exposed, like a desert, will be heated more readily by the sun. (This is called...

    Deer ate my hops

Get some chicken wire or some of that thicker mesh wire, and put it around each one. Or build a fence around your garden.

    We have sprouts!

The first two which broke through the soil first, are the Tettnang and Hallertau, but now that they are all through the soil, the cascade chinook and nugget are taking off. I'll upload some pics in a bit :)

    We have sprouts!

So they just broke through the soil! It seems like all of a sudden they went rampant under the soil and they ALL just broke through! This is totally awesome! Will have pics tomorrow! :D

You can also buy those plastic giant buckets with the rope handles on each side. They are just over $5 each. (drill holes for drainage) And on a side note, I was driving on the 14 FWY today, and I looked to the east, and I see something that indicates someone is growing hops. It's the same...

    Hop leaves dry and brittle

Where do you live? Possibly not enough water, as it's so early in the year that I doubt it's hot enough outside to burn plants. Otherwise, I would say the soil was not prepared properly, but since it was growing fine earlier, the plant could be sick? I'm just throwing ideas out there...

    Squirrels

There is a 'pet repellent' that can be purchased at a hardware store. It's a powder your sprinkle around the perimeter. I guess animals aren't supposed t like the smell. If your squirrels live in trees, then try this: YouTube - Squirrel Flinga Anniversary

How long is it taking you to get sprouts this year?

I put mine 1 week ago, and still nothin. I ask because the weather has been in the upper 30's at night lately, but I read they can survive this. As well, there has been some light showers these last couple of days, and it's supposed to rain modestly on Friday. I could cover them, but I feel I...

    Squirrels

It's funny you ask this, because I just took care of a little squirrel & gulfer problem this past Saturday. :D Here's how's I's did's it. Tennis balls... Punched a hole in all of them with a pair of scissors. I then took "Starting Fluid" (Ether) and filled up the tennis balls with quite...
