    Spicing up EdWort's Apfelwein

1 or 2 cinnamon sticks plus about four or five whole cloves and a touch of brown sugar per 2 12oz bottles of brewed apfelwein works out great; warm it up, strain it out and enjoy. Be careful not to simmer tho unless you want to say bye bye to all the alcohol goodness (unless of course that's...

You Wanna Read Some Serious Anti-Beer Propaganda?

Exactly theres a huge difference between water (H2O) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) but the chemical formula is "pretty close". What a Jackass that dude is. It does however show the intelligence of the person who wrote it. That article just made me laugh!

Russian Imperial Stout- Warning VIOLENT ferment!

I love brewing with the 6.5 but I've had two hefe's with white labs wlp300 that have managed to top that and required a blow off. Use them now all the time now. Side note: I've heard that they're not making the 6.5gal carboys anymore, anybody know anything about that?

    HELP!!! My thermometer broke!!!!

Thats why you can't go wrong with the digital remote probe style thermometers! Just loop the cord around a handle and have it dangling in the wort so the whole probe doesn't get submerged. The trick i learned the hard way (read: $60 in new unneccessary thermometers) was if water/wort does get...

    Stupid bottle washing question

+1 on the three time rinse and a quick look to make sure the bottle is clear before storing I also run the bottles in the bottom rack of the dishwasher prior to bottling: 1 time with some detergent then rerun one more time with no detergent and the heatdry on to sanitize

Can you fill a 5gal secondary half full?

I dont know if you have access to a Costco or Sams Club etc but they are carrying whole Vanilla Beans now. We saw them over by the seasoning section just the other day. Plus they're club stores so you get a whole lot for not too much money

    FG and Corn Sugar

Thanks for the info, sorry forgot to include that it was for a 5gal batch. I was very surprised that it was below 1.00 myself until I went back and saw that some ppl were having Apfelwein's with s.g. around .990.

    FG and Corn Sugar

Last week while bottling I knocked over my hydrometer sample jar and was forced to retake a sample but this time it was after I had already primed my bottling bucket with 3/4 cup of corn sugar. Does anybody know how much priming sugar effects the specific gravity before its fermented out? I'm...

    Magnetic Stirrer/Yeast Starter Question

\ I'm sure this question has been asked before and sorry for hijacking the thread but Is there a good method to Decanting? Just let everything settle and slowly pour off the liquid or use a syphon or some other method? Thanks

    Cleaning and Sanitizing

Just curious if anybody else cleans their equipment with a cleanser after using and then before the next batch only sanitizes? Thats what I've been doing lately; cleaning with Straight-A after every use then storing it in a rubbermaid container until its a new brew day and only sanitizing with...

    Another Starter Question

Probably a newbie question, but what sort of foam plugs are you guys using. And do you sterilize them by dunking them in Idophor or Star-Sans?

    Another Starter Question

I'm sure its possible, but has anybody actually had a started get infected and then without knowing it transfer the infection to their wort? I'm getting ready to make a stir plate and have been reading that when using a stir plate to use aluminum foil to cover the flask instead of an...

    Dry vs. Liquid

if your recipe calls for an odd amount of extract you can go to the LHBS and pick up an exact amount of LME from their bulk tanks and avoid having an odd amount of DME sitting around some corner of your basement*. Thats why I use LME and haven't really noticed a difference between the two. Of...

If iodophor solution has been sitting in a keg for weeks...

According to the directions on my package of B-T-F "as long as there is an amber color in the solution a sufficient amount of Iodine is present in solution for sanitizing" I've always just used that as my indicator and never had a problem

If you scroll around on that site, they have a whole video series starting with equipment all the way to bottling which is pretty good, and covers about every question that a beginning brewer has ever asked. I prob watched each of those a few times. Hope the link helps KB

    Flagstaff, AZ area beer?

I don't know if you can get any to go from the Beaver Street Brewery ( Beaver Street Brewery Home Page ) but if your relatives live right in the area tell them to stop by and see. You can't beat their Hefe or Rail Head Red Ale
